Normal way From the Arvental to the Merbjoch and over the southwest ridge ( I )

The Merbspitze is a 3090  m above sea level. A. high mountain peaks of the Prettaukamm in the Venediger group . The summit is on the Italian - Austrian border and was first climbed on August 21, 1882 by Ludwig Purtscheller and Georg Nöckler over the western flank. The mountain got its name from the crumbling (brittle) rock, whereby the Merbspitze was formerly also known as Knappenspitze or Rote Spitze .

location

The Merbspitze lies on the border between the South Tyrolean municipality of Prettau in the north and the East Tyrolean municipality of St. Jakob in Defereggen in the south. In relation to the Prettaukamm, the Merbspitze lies in the northwest. To the southwest, the Merbjoch ( 2832  m above sea level ) separates the Merbspitze from the Lenkspitze ( 3105  m above sea level ), to the south-east the Merbscharte ( 2845  m above sea level ) and the Rötfleckscharte ( 2855  m above sea level ) mark the Transition to the south-west summit of Löfflergrat ( 3132  m above sea level ). The long north-west ridge leads to the Kleiner Ötschen ( 2749  m above sea level ). The south side of the Merbspitze slopes down to the Arvental with the Arventalbach , the northwest side to the Merbalpe with the Merbbach that flows into the Ahrntal . To the northeast, the Merbspitze drops off to the Röttal . The mountain flanks of the Merbspitze are protected by the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park .

Promotion opportunities

The normal route to the Merbspitze starts at the Alpengasthaus Oberhaus and then runs first on the Almstraße to the Jagdhausalm and then to the Arventalalm. The further ascent takes place along the Arvental brook and then leads to the Merbjoch, from where the Merbspitze can be climbed easily over the southwest ridge ( I ). There are options for climbing the Merbspitze with the ascent over the east ridge from the Jagdhausalm via Merbscharte ( I ), the ascent from the Merbalpe over the west flank ( I ) or the transition from the Kleiner Ötschen over the north-west ridge ( III- ).
