Merkendorf is a district of the Upper Franconian community Itzgrund in the Coburg district .

geography

The hamlet is located about 16 kilometers southwest of Coburg , at the foot of the 455 meter high Eierberge. The Weizenbach, a left tributary of the Itz, flows through the village .

history

Merkendorf was first mentioned in the 9th century as "Merkeldorf" in the traditions of the Fulda monastery , which are based on a copy in the Codex Eberhardi from the 12th century. In 1179 the place was called Mirkendorf.

In 1862 it was incorporated into the newly created Bavarian district office in Staffelstein . Merkendorf belonged to the neighboring Draisdorf .

In 1875 the hamlet had 22 residents and 11 buildings. The Protestant school and church were in Herreth, two kilometers away . In 1925, 17 residents lived in three houses in Merkendorf. In 1987 the hamlet had 13 residents and three houses with three apartments.

On July 1, 1972, the Staffelstein district was dissolved. Merkendorf was reclassified from Draisdorf to Kaltenbrunn . Since then, the hamlet has belonged to the Coburg district. In the course of the Bavarian regional reform , Kaltenbrunn lost its independence as a municipality on May 1, 1978 and, like its Merkendorf district, became part of the Itzgrund municipality.
