Michael Emanuel Bauer (born January 4, 1974 in Roding ) is a German composer .

Life

After attending grammar school in Zwiesel , Michael Emanuel Bauer studied musicology as well as ancient, modern and modern history at the University of Regensburg from 1995 . In 1997 he moved to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he graduated in 2003 with a Magister Artium in musicology. He also attended composition courses with Karlheinz Stockhausen , Dieter Schnebel and Bernhard Lang . He also took part in the Darmstadt summer courses for new music.

In addition, in 2002 Bauer completed piano studies at the New Jazz School in Munich with Max Neissendorfer. From 2004 to 2006 he took private lessons in film and theater music with the Fassbinder composer Peer Raben , with whom he also worked. In this context, u. a. an arrangement of Peer Raven's musical contribution to Wong Kar-Wai's film 2046 .

In 2006, Bauer began studying for a doctorate at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz . In 2012 he received his doctorate there. phil. in musicology / jazz research with a dissertation on Peer Raven's film music for selected Fassbinder films.

Bauer has been working as a freelance composer since 2001, primarily in the field of music and spoken theater. His works were performed at the Wiener Festwochen , at the Deutsches Theater Berlin , Residenztheater Munich , Staatsschauspiel Dresden , Staatstheater Stuttgart , Schauspielhaus Bochum , at the Neuköllner Oper Berlin and at the Munich Biennale (collaboration with, among others, Nurkan Erpulat , Fabian Gerhardt, Ulrich Rasche , Matthias Rebstock , Johannes Schmid , Sandra Strunz and Miriam Tscholl ). The second focus of his artistic activity is the composition of chamber music works. He also writes music for art house and documentaries .

Bauer's work moves in the field of tension between music, visual arts, film and theater. He often makes use of various collage techniques with interwoven and adapted musical quotations (" found footage "). In this he is close to the Appropriation Art , as z. B. is practiced by the artists Elaine Sturtevant , Wade Guyton , Cindy Sherman , the collective Equipo Cronica and by Martin Arnold .

In addition to his work as a composer, Bauer is a lecturer for theater and composition at the chair for theater studies at the University of Bayreuth and at the University of Hildesheim , Institute for Music and Musicology. In 2019 he was a jury member in the 10th International Antonin Dvorak Composition Competition in Prague . Since 2003 he has been teaching music as an elective at the technical college in Regen .
