Life
Hunter attended high school in Würzburg and studied at the University of Wuerzburg then medicine . On February 20, 1818 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . A study trip to Vienna , Berlin and Hamburg followed . After 1819 he became a doctor for the poor in Würzburg. On June 8, 1821, he passed the medical state examination and was able to settle down as a general practitioner in Würzburg. However, he remained connected to science. On February 18, 1822 , he completed his habilitation at the Würzburg University and then taught pathological anatomy as a private lecturer . He organized anatomical demonstrations in the Juliusspital .
Jäger had actually applied for a clinical apprenticeship in Landshut, but after Bernhard Nathanael Gottlob Schreger had died, he was appointed director of the surgical and ophthalmological clinic and an extraordinary professorship at the University of Erlangen on October 1, 1826 . He reformed the clinic and made it possible, through government grants, to treat more people in need. On June 24, 1831, he received a full professorship in surgery at Erlangen University .
By royal order and against his will, Jäger had to return to the same position in Würzburg on October 30, 1832. Here, too, he immediately began reforming the clinic, and the university approved the establishment of a collection of instruments. This received high grants. However, with his reforms he drew the resentment of his colleagues. In addition, a disease of the larynx became noticeable. Therefore, he was transferred back to his previous positions by royal order on November 4, 1834 in Erlangen. His assistant Franz Jordan von Ried had to take over Jäger's lectures and exercises due to Jäger's progressive illness.
