Michael Kupfer-Radecky , b. Kupfer (born July 10, 1972 in Ravensburg ) is a German opera singer ( baritone ).

Career

Kupfer received his first singing lessons at the municipal music school in his hometown. In a music school production of Lortzings Zar und Zimmermann in the Konzerthaus Ravensburg , he also appeared on stage for the first time in an opera role in 1990 as Lefort. Kupfer studied with Kammersängerin Wilma Lipp at the Mozarteum in Salzburg . Then he was admitted to the opera studio of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where chamber singer Astrid Varnay taught him. He also studied with Hanno Blaschke and Carol Richardson. Later in his career, he also studied with Konrad Jarnot , who supported him in the transition from lyrical baritone and cavalier baritone to dramatic baritone.

Kupfer's first role in a professional opera production was that of the black in Aribert Reimann's Das Schloss (director: Willy Decker ) at the Munich Opera Festival in 1995. In 1997 he took up his first permanent engagement at the Koblenz Theater . The engagement was followed by further fixed contracts at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven (2000) and at the Städtische Bühnen Krefeld / Mönchengladbach (since 2006). He has also made guest appearances at theaters in Europe, sang with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra , and worked with the conductors Ingo Metzmacher and Marcello Viotti .

As part of a cooperation with the conductor and director Gustav Kuhn , which has existed since 1993 , Kupfer sang Harlequin in Richard Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos in Milan and Bologna in 1995 . At the Tiroler Festspiele Erl, whose artistic director is Kuhn, Kupfer has appeared in several Wagner roles since 2000 as Kurwenal in Tristan and Isolde , as Klingsor in Parsifal , Donner in Das Rheingold , Gunther in Götterdämmerung , Hans Sachs in the Meistersinger von Nürnberg as well as Eisenstein in Johann Strauss 'operetta Die Fledermaus , Orest in Richard Strauss' Elektra , also in orchestral concerts and recitals. In 2010 he sang all three baritone roles in the world premiere of Ernst Ludwig Leitner's opera Die Hochzeit . In 2011 he made his role debut in Erl as Wolfram in Wagner's Tannhäuser , and in April 2012 he made his debut at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow as Faninal (Richard Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier ) . In 2013 he sang Wotan in Rheingold at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo , and in 2016 Hans Sachs in the Meistersinger at the Opéra National de Paris .

In addition to operatic roles in the lyrical and cavalry baritone, oratorio roles are part of his repertoire, including the baritone and bass parts in Bach's St. John Passion and St. Matthew Passion , Haydn's Creation and Seasons , Mendelssohn's Elias and Paulus , Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem , Beethoven's 9th Symphony and Mahler's 8th Symphony .

Awards

In addition to first prizes at “ Jugend musiziert ”, Michael Kupfer received a sponsorship award in 1993 at the “Mastersingers Competition” in Nuremberg and at the “ New Voices ” competition of the Bertelsmann Foundation in Gütersloh. In 2008 and 2009 he received the "Theater Oscar of the Rheinschen Post" as "Best Singer of the Season".
