Michael Ernest Putney (born June 20, 1946 in Gladstone , Queensland , Australia , † March 28, 2014 in Townsville ) was Bishop of Townsville .

Life

Michael Putney attended St Joseph's Primary School and Our Lady's Mount College in Townsville and St. Columban's College in Albion Heights, a suburb of Brisbane . He then entered the seminary of Pius XII. in Banyo and studied Catholic theology and philosophy . The Bishop of Armidale , Henry Joseph Kennedy , ordained him on June 28, 1969 . From 1970 to 1971 Putney was chaplain at Burleigh Heads . From 1971 onwards he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he obtained a licentiate in theology in 1973 . This was followed by a further study visit to the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium .

From 1975 Putney was a lecturer in systematic theology at the seminary in Banyo and until 1981 lecturer in sacramental theology and ecclesiology at McAuley Teachers' College , the Institute of Faith Education and the Pastoral Liturgy Institute in Brisbane. From 1983 to 1985 he was an assistant professor of theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University, where, in 1985, after completing a dissertation entitled The Presence and Activity of the Holy Spirit in the Church, in the Studies of the Commission on Faith and Order (1927- 1983) with the title summa cum laude for Dr. theol. received his doctorate .

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Mizigi and auxiliary bishop in Brisbane on May 31, 1995 . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Brisbane, John Alexius Bathersby , on July 27 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Francis Roberts Rush , Archbishop Emeritus of Brisbane, and William Martin Morris , Bishop of Toowoomba . His motto Exsultabit super te in laude comes from the book Zefanja ( Zef 3,17  EU ).

He was named Bishop of Townsville by John Paul II on January 24, 2001, and he was instituted on March 27 of the same year. He was a member of the Standing Committee of the Australian Bishops' Conference, Vice-Chairman of the Dialogue Commission of the Methodist and Roman Catholic Churches, and Chairman of the Australian National Council of Churches. He was also involved in the Mission and Faith Communication Commission. Putney was called to the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity in 2004 by John Paul II .

Michael Putney was the first prior of the Order of North Queensland, newly founded in 2002, of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . In 2013 he was awarded the Order of Australia (AM) for his commitment .

Putney died in March 2014 at the age of 67 from cancer diagnosed in 2012.
