Michael Schmidt (diplomat)

Michael Schmidt (born June 19, 1932 in Mannheim ; † December 16, 2019 ) was a German diplomat .

Life

Michael Schmidt studied after graduating from high school in Konstanz law and economics at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg . After graduating with a degree in economics, he was promoted to Dr. rer. pole. PhD. He joined the diplomatic service in the Foreign Office in 1957 and initially worked at the Bonn headquarters. This was followed by assignments abroad in Antananarivo , Madagascar (1960), Conakry , Guinea (1960–1962) and in Nairobi , Kenya (1963–1967) and activities in the Bonn headquarters of the Foreign Office.

From 1971 to 1973 Michael Schmidt was the German ambassador in Ouagadougou in Upper Volta (Burkina Faso), from 1973 to 1976 in Beirut in Lebanon , from 1976 to 1985 in Pretoria in South Africa . After heading the Africa department at the Foreign Office in Bonn, he was ambassador to Abidjan , Ivory Coast, from 1985 to 1990 . From 1990 to 1994 Schmidt was Consul General in Montreal , Canada and from 1994 to 1997 Ambassador in Colombo , Sri Lanka , and from 1996 to 1997 Ambassador to the Maldives , based in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
