Midtjylland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Danish land Midtjylland ( Central Jutland ) is a not precisely defined area in the central part of the peninsula Jutland , especially the west of the Jutland Ridge ( Danish jyske højderyg ).

Geographical location

The exact location varies and usually includes the towns of Herning , Viborg , Silkeborg and the towns of Ikast , Brande and Bjerringbro . Often Grindsted , Billund and Give in the south, sometimes Holstebro and Skive in the northwest.

Midtjylland overlapped to a large extent with Vestjylland , a smaller part of Østjylland (Silkeborg) and Sydjylland (Grindsted, Give and Billund, which can be counted as part of West Jutland).

Most of what is now Midtjylland is traditional West Jutian culture and dialect ; the residents are West Jüten , so in Herning, Skive, Ikast, Brande, Holstebro, Skive, Grindsted, Give and Billund. In contrast, Silkeborg and the other areas east of the Jutland ridge and the Jutland watershed , which roughly follows Hovedvej 13 ( Primærrute 13 ), belong to the traditional East Jutland cultural area.

history

Midtjylland is a term that has only been used since the second half of the 20th century. The "classic" division of the Jutland peninsula is West, East, North and South Jutland. Of these, only South Jutland ( Sønderjylland or North Schleswig ) has a fixed delimitation, which can be derived from the historic Duchy of Schleswig .

The largest part of the Midtjylland region belongs culturally and historically to West Jutland, linguistically to the West Jutland dialect area, and in terms of landscape to the West Jutland flat plain (Jutland heather), in contrast to the more densely populated hill country of East Jutland. Therefore the area was formerly part of West Jutland, although some parts of it were closer to the east than the west coast.

Official Uses

The term Midtjylland took on a completely new meaning with the Danish territorial reform in 2007 , when the districts were dissolved and five large administrative regions , including the Midtjylland region , were formed. This describes a much larger area, which has nothing to do with the historical landscape, between two other administrative regions, Region Nordjylland and Region Syddanmark .

With the establishment of Naturstyrelsen , the Danish nature conservation authority, a nature conservation region of Midtjylland was created in 2011, which, however, only comprises a 50 km wide strip in central Jutland around Skive, Herning, Ikast and Brande.

The Herning-Vejle diagonal motorway is called Midtjyske Motorvej , although parts of it run in the Syddanmark region. The east-west-facing Herning-Århus motorway, which will be a main artery in the administrative region of Midtjylland, will, however, be named Herningmotorvejen .
