Mike Runnels

Mike Runnels (born around 1946 in Arkansas , † February 5, 2015 in Ruidoso , New Mexico ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1983 and 1987 he was lieutenant governor of the state of New Mexico. His father was Congressman Harold L. Runnels (1924–1980).

Career

Mike Runnels grew up in Lovington, New Mexico . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He became a district attorney in the 13th Judicial District of New Mexico. In 1982 Runnels was elected lieutenant governor of his state alongside Toney Anaya . He held this office between January 1, 1983 and January 1, 1987. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He ran twice, in 1986 and 2000, each unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives . In his last candidacy, he already failed in the democratic primary elections .

After the end of his time as lieutenant governor, he practiced again as a lawyer. He was noticed several times for traffic offenses. In 2010 he was suspended by a court as a lawyer for one year. He was also forced to work 100 hours for social causes and pay a fine for violating his legal practice to the detriment of his client.
