Milan Šašik CM (born September 17, 1952 in Lehota , Czechoslovakia ; † July 14, 2020 in Uzhhorod , Ukraine ) was diocesan bishop of the Ruthenian-Greek-Catholic diocese of Mukacheve in Transcarpathia , Ukraine.

Šášik secretly entered the religious order of the Lazarists (Vinzentines) in Slovakia in 1971 and studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary in Bratislava . He was ordained a priest on June 6, 1976 in the Cathedral of St. Martin in Bratislava from the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trnava , Julius Gábriš .

Milan Šašik was initially active in pastoral care in Slovakia and in the order. From 1990 to 1992 he studied at the Pontifical Faculty Teresianum in Rome. In June 1992, after completing his studies, he received a licentiate in theology. At the beginning of January 1991 he visited Ukraine for the first time and also Zakarpattia there. In the summer of 1991 he gained ten weeks of missionary experience in Ecuador . In winter 1992 he visited the cities of Moscow , Volgograd , Kamyshin and Engels in Russia .

From 1992 to 1998 he worked for the newly founded Apostolic Nunciature in Ukraine as an interpreter and attaché to Nuncio Antonio Franco in Kiev . On October 9, 1998, Milan Šašik was awarded the Cross of Honor Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice .

In 1998 he returned to Slovakia, where he was appointed Rector of the Vincentian Community in Banská Bystrica . In 2000 he became the regens of the novice training of the Lazarists in Slovakia, later he looked after the believers of the Latin and Byzantine rites in Peretschyn on the Ukrainian-Slovakian border.

In 2002 he was appointed titular bishop of Bononia by Pope John Paul II and apostolic administrator "ad nutum Sanctae Sedis" of the Greek Catholic diocese of Mukacheve. He was ordained bishop by John Paul II on January 6, 2003 in Rome, co-consecrators were Archbishop Leonardo Sandri , substitute in the State Secretariat, and Archbishop Antonio Maria Vegliò , Secretary at the Congregation for Oriental Churches. On March 17, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI raised him . as the diocesan bishop of the Mukacheve diocese based in Uzhhorod , the capital of the Transcarpathian Oblast .

In June 2003, Šášik, together with the Pope's special envoy, Roger Cardinal Etchegaray , transferred the relics of the Blessed Bishop Theodor Romscha to the Uzhhorod Cathedral. In June 2004 he inaugurated the new building of the theological academy and the seminary of Blessed Theodor Romscha in Uzhhorod together with Josef Cardinal Tomko .

In 2009, Šášik took Ukrainian citizenship.

From 2011 he was a member of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences .

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the official recognition of the Mukacheve diocese after the collapse of communism, around 1000 pilgrims and around 50 priests from Ukraine, led by Bishop Šašik and Auxiliary Bishop Nil Yury Luschtschak, visited the Vatican to thank them for 30 years of freedom. Before the general audience, Pope Francis received this group personally.

In addition to his mother tongue , Milan Šašik spoke Slovak , Ukrainian , Italian , Czech , Russian and Polish .
