Location and description

The Mittelberg is located in the district of Wangen (Unstrut) , since July 1, 2009 a district of the small town of Nebra (Unstrut) . Part of the Mittelberg is in the area of the city of Querfurt in the Saalekreis. The Mittelberg is north of the locality of Wangen and the Unstrut . The Nebra Sky Disc was found on the Mittelberg , but not in the area of the city of Nebra, but in the Ziegelroda Forest in the district of Ziegelroda , which has belonged to Querfurt since 2004. The hill, which is wooded today, except for the site, apparently had no tree growth in the Bronze Age .

Observation tower

Near the place where the sky disc was found, a 30 m high and deliberately inclined 10 ° viewing tower was built, which serves as a pointer of a kind of sundial . The sky disk apparently served as a solar calendar , as seen from the Mittelberg in the line of sight to the Brocken the sun sets here at the summer solstice ( June 21 ) and on May 1 behind the Kyffhäuser .

Historical meaning

The Mittelberg is the place where the Nebra Sky Disc was found , which was excavated here on July 4th, 1999 by robbery graves . The “celestial eye” was created at the location where it was found, a curved disc made of polished stainless steel, which allows an indirect view of the sky and space and is a symbol of the earth's connection with space .

Since the sky disc was found together with other cult objects, archaeologists assume that the Mittelberg was an observatory and possibly also a place of worship . Remains of a later, early Iron Age rampart were found. The sky disc itself is exhibited in the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale) .

The Arche Nebra visitor center is located about 3.5 km to the southeast .

getting there

Since April 10, 2009, passenger trains on the Unstrutbahn have been running to Wangen again, so that rail travelers from Naumburg (Saale) can get close to the Mittelberg and the Nebra Ark. A shuttle bus runs from the car park of Arche Nebra and the train station to the site on the Mittelberg.
