Monster Shark , alternative TV title The Monster Shark , is an Italian-French animal horror film directed by Lamberto Bava from 1984.

action

The corpse of a man whose legs have been bitten off by a creature is recovered off the coast of Florida . The pathologist is puzzled: although the bite marks are similar to those of a shark, they are much larger. Researcher Dr. Stella Dickens that the dolphins she cares for suddenly become restless. In the sea her assistant Dr. At the same time, Bob Warner made an unusual noise at the Seaquarium , indicating that a marine animal, unknown to him, rammed the research vessel shortly afterwards. The instruments on board play crazy, but do not pick up the sound that Bob later describes as a "tone full of hate". Stella turns to her friend Peter, who specializes in measuring instruments for research. Although he actually wants to go on vacation in New York, he stays and builds a special measuring unit for Stella and Bob. His girlfriend Sandra is mildly jealous of the beautiful Stella.

At the research institute West Ocean International, the employees under Prof. Donald West research the genetics of animals. West's wife Sonja has an affair with the ambitious colleague Dr. Davis Barker. The young Florinda is also part of the team. When she announces that she no longer wants to play and that she will reveal everything to the press, she is murdered by the seedy John Miller. This calls Sheriff Gordon on the scene, who already has enough to do with the case of the shark attack dead. A short time later, Miller broke into Peter's shop and destroyed the measuring unit built for Stella.

Some time later, two divers are attacked by the being of the deep. One of the men survives but dies in the hospital before he can testify to Gordon. A reconstruction of the being's dentition suggests huge teeth. Meanwhile, Stella, Bob, Peter and Sandra manage to record the sounds of the being with Peter's measuring unit. They play it to Prof. West, whose computer cannot reveal anything about the nature. Bob contacts paleontologist Dr. Janes Bates, who suspects a living fossil in the essence that may be an ancestor of the sharks. Bob plans to catch it alive. He goes out to sea with Stella, Sandra and Peter and releases buoys with transmitters. One of the buoys does not work. While Peter and Stella drive off to look for the buoy, the creature attacks the Seaquarium and pulls Bob down with it. Janet can defend herself against the being. The footage shows that the animal is a shark with grasping arms that is not only very large, but also very fast. Examination of tissue samples, however, reveals a very young age of the cells. Prof. West concludes that the animal can reproduce itself when injured. This makes it hard to kill.

Meanwhile, Miller kills other people involved, including Sandra. When Jane, Stella and Peter are looking for the monster again, Miller enters the Seaquarium and shoots Jane. While trying to kill Stella and Peter as well, he is surprised by the monster that kills him. Meanwhile, Prof. West finds out in West Ocean International that the being is the result of a gene experiment that his colleague Dr. Davis Barker secretly performed. The monster with the appearance of an octopus and the intelligence of a dolphin is a prototype programmed to control a specific area of the sea. Davis lost control of the being a few months after it was created. Before Davis can kill Prof. West, he is shot by Sheriff Gordon. Peter has the idea to destroy the monster with fire. He reprograms the being's sound recordings to make it think that there is a second being like it. He then lures it into a trap, in which the monster burns after a few more deaths.

Stella and Peter survived. They become a couple and now travel together on vacation - to the mountains.

criticism

For film-dienst , Monster Shark was an “adventure and horror film with criminalistic elements, which gives its subject away from the responsibility of the researcher in favor of a staging that focuses on superficial action.” “Anyone who likes Italian, slightly trashy B-movies will well served here ”, summarized tierhorror.de . For Cinema the film was a “cross between garbage and involuntary humor”.
