The Alte Mordgrube (often just Mordgrube ) is a disused mine south of Freiberg in Saxony. It was one of the most important mines in the Freiberg mountain area. The murder pit is on the Zugspitze , on the corridor border between Zug, Berthelsdorf, Brand and Erbisdorf.

history

The murder pit has been occupied since 1516. Connected to the murder pit is the legend of dancers who, when a priest wanted to give the last unction to a seriously ill person, refused to pay homage to this sacrament (or to anointing oil and / or host ) and were torn into depth for it.

The new main shaft of the pit, sunk in the 18th century, was named Mendenschacht in honor of the art master Johann Friedrich Mende . Christian Friedrich Brendel built the Mordgrübner water column machine in 1820-24 , which was used at a depth of 140 m. For decades it was a teaching example at the Bergakademie Freiberg and other universities. While the Alte Mordgrube was one of the poorest mines in Freiberg around 1800 , thanks to this solution it was already one of the richest mines in 1831. It was considered the most important lead ore mine in the area.

In the middle of the 19th century, the Alte Mordgrube was combined with the Junge Mordgrube near Berthelsdorf to form the Mordgrube . In 1856 the murder pit with Neu Glück and Drei Eichen as well as United Field in the bush area consolidated to the United Field near fire pit . This in turn was bought by the Saxon state in 1886 and merged with the pits Beschert Glück behind the Drei Kreuzen and Junge Hohe Birke at the Münzbachhütte to form the middle pit . On June 30, 1896, the Mendenschachten district of the central pit was shut down by the senior management of the royal ore mines.

After that, a new factory of the Freiberg leather factory Moritz Stecher was built in the processing area. The plant also used part of the daytime building for residential purposes. In front of the mine’s hat house, a memorial commemorates the tannery workers who died in the First World War.

In the converted pit house of Menden shaft Established in 1906, the picnic area to Zugspitze , which in 1997 concluded. The 19th century buildings on the shaft dump were renovated between 2003 and 2005 and are now largely used for residential purposes. As part of the renovation, the restaurant was also reopened.

The complex of the Mendenschachtes of the old murder pit represents one of the most important mining monument complexes in the Brand-Erbisdorf mining area. The exterior of the day buildings has remained largely authentic to this day. Mines, driveways and engine rooms were preserved underground . However, the most important technical monument, the Mordgrübner water column machine , built between 1820 and 1824 , is currently not open to the public.
