Moritz Ulffers (born January 15, 1819 in Hamburg , † March 16, 1902 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter , draftsman and lithographer .

Life

Moritz Ulffers, born in Hamburg in 1819, studied from 1847 to 1852 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Wilhelm von Schadow . Like many of his fellow students under von Schadow, he initially dealt with religious motifs in history painting . He later painted genre scenes and soon devoted himself particularly to lithography, which, apart from wood engraving and copperplate engraving, was the only way to reproduce paintings before photography was invented. In the course of the emerging art trade in the middle of the 19th century and the increasing demand for art prints and illustrations, lithography created additional sales opportunities for the painters at the Düsseldorf School of Painting . Not only did a number of Düsseldorf companies and publishers handle media production and distribution, the artists also specialized in reproductions in order to earn a living.

Ulffers was a member of the artists' association Malkasten , and when Schadow had his 25th anniversary at the art academy, the artists of the Malkasten celebrated him with a Schadowfest in November 1851. On this occasion, they honored him with an artist album, the so-called Schadow album. Moritz Ulffers was one of the 70 former Schadow students who provided a pen drawing for this purpose. His sheet The Judgment of Solomon is described as follows: “The king seated on a high throne, on his sides his courtiers and scribes and on his steps the two quarreling mothers; on the left there is a hangman about to kill the child. "

Ulffers was married to Josephine, nee Schneeloch. Around 1855 he lived in Duisburger Strasse 125 in Düsseldorf. In October 1855, the son of Friedrich Joseph Ulffers was born. Then they moved to Jägerhofstrasse house no.27, a few years later, in 1863, to house no.26. In the period of his highest creative period, around 1865, he moved to Goltsteinstrasse no.22 .

In 1869 he asked the painter and initiator of the General German Art Cooperative , Hermann Becker , to intercede for a picture sale at the Cologne cathedral building raffle, organized by the Zentral-Dombau-Verein.

At the Wehrhahn (then Werhahnen) he found his next home in the mid-1870s in house no. 34, in which the painters Carl Hilgers and Emil Volkers also lived at that time . From the 1880s he lived on Adlerstrasse, first house no. 48, then no. 63. In the 1890s he lived briefly on Grafenberger Allee (then Grafenberger Chaussee) no. 97. Then he moved to Rethelstrasse no. 32 around. Most recently, now 82 years old, he moved to Wielandstrasse No. 26.

He carried out commissioned work for numerous publishers, including for the “German Artist Album” from Breidenbach & Co. Verlag in Düsseldorf, and in 1865 and 1866 for the “Düsseldorf Artist Album” at Arnz & Comp. He worked for the Düsseldorf monthly magazine , in 1874 for Die Gartenlaube . Presumably Ulffers had also designed advertisements, including the 1879 advertisement for "Blatz's Milwaukee Lager Beer" by the Valentin Blatz Brewing Company .
