Ms. Dynamite , MBE (born April 26, 1981 in London ; real name: Niomi Arleen McLean-Daley ) is a British hip-hop musician. Her music received a lot of media coverage and she won the Brit Award for British Female Solo Artists in 2003. In 2002 she became the first black female winner of the Mercury Music Prize .

Career

Ms. Dynamite was born in 1981 as Niomi Arleen Daley and grew up in Archway in the London Borough of Islington in north London to a Jamaican father and a Scottish mother. Her brother is the rapper and grime musician Akala .

In 2001 she appeared as a guest singer in the garage song "Booo" by Sticky (Richard Forbes), which entered the UK singles charts and reached number 12 there. Their debut album "A Little Deeper" was released in 2002 and received positive feedback worldwide. It was produced by Salaam Remi , who previously worked for Fugees and Nas , and it was recorded in studios in the US and Jamaica . There were two single releases from the album, each of which had a music video: "Dy-na-mit-tee" and "It Takes More". Ms. Dynamite was for the album at the MOBO Awards in 2002 both as "UK Act of the Year" as well as "Best Newcomer" and at the BRIT Awards 2003 as "British Urban Act", "British Female Solo Artist" and "British Breakthrough Act ”. The album was awarded the Mercury Music Prize 2002 and the BRIT Award 2003 as album of the year and the single "It Takes More" was rated best single of the year at the MOBO Awards 2002. "Dy-na-mit-tee" was also nominated for the best single of the year award in 2003. She donated the £ 20,000 prize money for the Mercury Music Prize to charity to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). In 2003, she interrupted her career when her son Shavaar was born in June.

On July 2, 2005, she performed at the worldwide Live 8 benefit concerts in London's Hyde Park , where she played Bob Marley's " Redemption Song " in addition to her own songs . Their second album, "Judgment Days", was released in October 2005, although it did not match the success of their debut. In terms of content, she addressed social problems such as B. in "Judgment Days" or the criticism of the British Prime Minister Tony Blair in "Mr Prime Minister".

An album originally announced for 2009 entitled "Democracy" was not released and Ms. Dynamite focused on other projects besides her role as mother. In 2009 she appeared on the TV show Hell's Kitchen on ITV1 and as a juror on the casting show Goldie's Band: By Royal Appointment on BBC Two . There were also collaborations with other musicians, for example on the single "Lights On" by Katy B , which rose to number 10 on the UK singles charts in 2010, as well as the single "Fire" by Magnetic Man on their debut album. In 2011 her single "Neva Soft" was released. In February 2013 she sang as accompanist in the song "Dibby Dibby Sound" in the project DJ Fresh Versus Jay Fray and in 2014 together with Elliphant and Showtek on "No Money No Love" for the album "Listen" by David Guetta .

In 2018 Ms. Dynamite became a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services in the field of music.
