The Municipio Pailón is a district in the Santa Cruz Department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
The municipality Pailón is one of three municipalities in the province of Chiquitos and includes its western area. It borders in the north on the province of Ñuflo de Chávez , in the west on the province Andrés Ibáñez , in the south on the province Cordillera , and in the east on the municipality of San José de Chiquitos .
The municipality extends between about 17 ° 12 'and 18 ° 19' south latitude and 61 ° 07 'and 62 ° 49' west longitude, its extent from west to east is up to 170 km, from north to south up to 115 km .
The municipality comprises 58 municipalities ( localidades ), the central place of the municipality is the city of Pailón with 9,850 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) on the western edge of the district.

The municipality of Pailón is located in the Bolivian lowlands between the alluvial plains of the Río Piraí and Río Grande in the west and the Chiquitos hill country in the east. The climate is semi-humid, the temperatures fluctuate only insignificantly during the day and during the year.
The annual average temperature is 24 to 25 ° C, with monthly average temperatures between almost 27 ° C in December and January and below 21 ° C in June and July (see climate diagram). The annual precipitation is around 950 mm, the dry season from July to September contrasts with a pronounced humidity period from November to February, in which the monthly values reach up to 140 mm.

The population density at the last census of 2012 was 3.7 inhabitants / km², the proportion of the urban population was 26.0 percent. The literacy rate among those over the age of 15 rose from 87.4 percent to 92.7 percent between 1992 and 2001. The life expectancy of newborns in 2001 was 64.3 years, the infant mortality had fallen from 6.7 percent (1992) to 6.1 percent in 2001.
63.7 percent of the population speak Spanish , 9.0 percent speak Quechua , 0.9 percent each speak Aymara and Guaraní , and 34.7 percent speak a foreign mother tongue, the vast majority of whom speak Plautdietsch with standard German as the written and church language . 64.9 percent of the population have no access to electricity , 10.4 percent live without sanitary facilities (2001) .
