Mother and Child is a German film drama and a love story of the director Hans Steinhoff from the year 1934. The film adaptation is based on a presentation of the playwright and poet Friedrich Hebbel . In the main role , Henny Porten embodies a brave mother who takes all the strokes of fate for her child, but ultimately also proves that mother's love is the greatest love.
action
The Petersen couple are threatened with despair over the fact that they have lost their only child. The fact is made more difficult by the fact that they cannot have any more children. At the same time, the maid Anna is expecting a child whom she and her friend Jürgen, a worker in a sawmill, have fathered.
When both the maid Anna and her boyfriend Jürgen are released from their jobs, they fear for the future of their child. They fear that they will not be able to feed them properly and that they will not be able to finance a good education for their offspring.
As a result, an agreement is reached: The now childless Peterson couple will have their child from them, and in return Anna and Jürgen will be given a farm . Anna first accepts this agreement, but when she gives birth to the child, she is unable to give it up. Shortly after the birth, she escapes with the newborn and threatens to drown while trying to escape in the Wadden Sea. At the last moment, her boyfriend manages to save Anna and the newborn from the floods.
The plot of the film ends well when the wealthy Petersen couple realize that there is no point in snatching a child from its mother. So the story ends that the Petersens do without the child and Anna and Jürgen are still allowed to keep the promised gift, the farm.
