The NE 81 is a four-axle diesel railcars , which specifically for the N maybe federally owned E isenbahnen designed and the first time 19 81 was delivered. The associated control cars and sidecars are also designated as NE 81 . Deutsche Bahn AG has also owned second-hand vehicles of this type since 2006 ; it designates the railcars as the 626 series and the control cars as the 926 series . A total of 26 railcars, 14 control cars and three sidecars were produced.
history
The NE 81 was developed by O&K in the 1970s . It is specially tailored to the requirements of the non-federally owned railways (NE) with medium traffic. The series 627.0 and 628.0 diesel multiple units developed for the German Federal Railroad in the first half of the 1970s were not suitable for this purpose, as they could not be used as towing vehicles in freight transport on their respective routes . With a maximum trailer load of 400 tons, the NE 81 fulfills this requirement. But even before the first vehicle was completed in the Berlin plant, O&K stopped building rail vehicles and sold the ongoing production of the NE 81 to Waggon Union (WU).
On September 6, 2018, the VT 420 took part in the first trip with ETCS Level 3 in the Deutsche Bahn network, on the Annaberg-Buchholz-Schwarzenberg railway line .
First series
The first vehicles were delivered in 1981. The Württembergische Nebenbahnen (WN) - which were incorporated into the Württembergische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (WEG) in 1984 - received two railcars and a control car, the Südwestdeutsche Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (SWEG) received six railcars and the Kahlgrund Verkehrs-GmbH (KVG) two railcars. These three railway companies also contributed to the development. In addition, a railcar was delivered to the Regentalbahn (RAG). The vehicles of the first delivery have bogies from Orenstein & Koppel (O&K) and a top speed of 80 km / h. The Swabian Alb Railway (SAB), the Nord-Ostsee-Bahn (NOB), the Hochwaldbahn (HWB) and the Westfrankenbahn (WFB) each received a railcar from second hand . In 1994, the SWEG handed over two railcars to the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG), but they were destroyed in an accident in 1998.
Another series was launched in 1985, the SWEG was supplied with two railcars, two trailer cars and six control cars, the Regentalbahn received one railcar and two control cars and the KVG two control cars. From 1985, Waggon Union bogies were installed, which enable a top speed of 90 km / h. Three control cars went to AVG in 1994, today one of them is with SWEG and two with WEG - one of which has been converted into a sidecar.
A WEG vehicle was taken over by Thales in 2014 and is used as a test vehicle for ETCS .
Second series
In 1993 a modified form was delivered. New seats were installed and the front was fitted with new headlights. The windscreen was reduced in size and a separate matrix display for showing the destination was installed instead of the integrated scrolling display. The engine output increased to 2 × 250 kW, the top speed to 100 km / h. The last vehicles were delivered in 1995 by ABB Henschel , which had taken over Waggon Union. The last series was delivered to WEG in 1994 and 1995 (two railcars and one control car for the Strohgäubahn and three railcars and two control cars for the Wieslauftalbahn ), KVG (one railcar), HzL (three railcars and one control car) and three railcars to the Bodensee-Oberschwaben-Bahn (BOB). The latter sold their vehicles to HzL in 2006 for use on the Seehäsle , where they operated until the end of 2008; they are now in use at SWEG. The KVG railcar is now with Deutsche Bahn.
There were no more new deliveries because since 1996 the Regio-Shuttle from Adtranz (now Stadler Rail ) has been a low-floor and much more powerful vehicle based on the NE 81 concept and with the variant with a screw coupling also a mixed multiple control made possible with NE 81.
In 2016, the Schwäbische Alb-Bahn bought the railcar VT 413 and the control car VS 250 from WEG, so it now has three railcars and control cars.
Also in that year, the Gesellschaft für Eisenbahnbetrieb mbH bought the railcar VT 412 and the trailer car VB 241 from WEG for its services on the Swabian Forest Railway.
The Hochwaldbahn operates a railcar for occasional traffic. Due to the delivery of new low-floor and air-conditioned railcars and the corresponding requirements for route tenders, many NE 81s only serve as a reserve. In 2013 the EGP (Eisenbahngesellschaft Potsdam, for its subsidiary HANS) acquired the VT 120 and two VBs from SWEG.

DB series 626 and 926
In autumn 2006, the German railway subsidiary took over Westfrankenbahn (WFB) of the KVG - where it holds a 28 percent of the capital - three railcars and two driving coaches after the completed in December 2005 change of operator on the railway line Kahl-Schoellkrippen of this were no longer needed. Deutsche Bahn integrated the vehicles under the series designations 626 and 926, respectively, and the vehicles were repainted by DB Regio according to the current traffic red color scheme . They serve as operational reserves and, due to their pulling power, are also used in front of construction trains or as a towing vehicle for transfer trips.
The control car 926 984-6 (formerly KVG VS 184) and the multiple unit VT 43 (formerly KVG VT 80) finally became the property of HWB. In December 2012, the VT 43 was resold by the company to the Eisenbahngesellschaft Potsdam (EGP) and has been running since January 7, 2013 with a new paint job on the Mecklenburg Lake District and in the Prignitz.
