NGC 6791 is an open star cluster in the constellation Lyra , which is approximately 13,300 light years from Earth . The star cluster is about 8 billion years old. However, recent studies with the Hubble Space Telescope reveal two other generations of stars, which are around 4 and 6 billion years old.

The open star cluster NGC 6791 was discovered in December 1853 by the German astronomer Friedrich August Theodor Winnecke .
