NGC 7278 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Toucan in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 558 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 130,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 5213 , IC 5218 , IC 5220 .

The object was discovered by John Herschel on August 11, 1836 .
