NGC 7278 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Toucan in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 558 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 130,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 5213 , IC 5218 , IC 5220 .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on August 11, 1836 .
