Nathalie Wappler

Nathalie Wappler Hagen (* 1968 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss - German journalist . She has been Director of Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) since March 2019 and Deputy Director General of SRG since 2020 .

Life and accomplishments

Wappler grew up in Kreuzlingen . She studied history , art history , political science and German and graduated with a Magister Artium from the University of Konstanz in the 1990s . She studied abroad at the University of Bristol in Great Britain and at Stanford University in California.

She spent her first years working as an editor and head of the service of the program " Kulturzeit " ( 3sat ) and as an editor for the ARD talk show "Joachim Gauck" produced by WDR , the weekly ZDF culture magazine " aspekte " and the weekly ZDF talk show " Maybrit Illner ».

From 2005 until he switched to Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk , Wappler held various positions at Swiss public television , which merged with Swiss Radio DRS to form Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) in 2011 . In the first few years she worked there as editor and producer of the weekly magazine “ Kulturplatz ” as well as editor and discussion leader for the programs “Sternstunde” ( philosophy , religion , art ).

From 2009 on, as a project manager in a responsible position, she accompanied various fundamental change processes at Swiss radio and television, developed strategies for a modern cultural radio, new film and series strategies and tri-media workplace models. She was the head of the culture department at Swiss radio and television and in this role was a member of the SRF management team, as well as a member of the management team of the German-speaking community broadcaster 3sat and a member of the supervisory board of the international program marketing company Telepool.

On May 9, 2016, the Broadcasting Council of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk approved the proposal by Artistic Director Karola Wille to appoint Wappler as program director of the MDR in Halle on November 1, 2016 . In November 2018, Wappler was unanimously elected Director of SRF by the SRG SSR Board of Directors, succeeding Ruedi Matter . She took up her position in March 2019. She has been Deputy Director General SRG since 2000, succeeding Ladina Heimgartner . She is a board member at Mediapulse .

Wappler is married to the German media scientist Wolfgang Hagen . She is a Swiss-German citizen .
