action

The student Martin takes over the job of night watchman in the pathology department of a hospital in Copenhagen from an old man in order to finance his studies. He has to overcome his fears with nightly work and regular tours. He lets his friend Jens persuade him to try his hand at tests of courage, including oral sex in a restaurant with the prostitute Joyce, who tells us that a serial killer is up to mischief in the scene who scalps his victims. When one of them comes to Martin's pathology department, he meets Inspector Wörmer, who inspects it. When Martin later finds this body outside the morgue, he notifies the doctor on duty. When this appears, the corpse is back in its original place and the student is suspected of being psychotic , later also necrophilic , when a corpse is discovered lying on its stomach, as well as Martin's sperm in a corner, that of having sex with his girlfriend Kalinka there from a previous night. Kalinka, who found out about Martin's contact with her from Joyce, wants to visit her in her apartment. However, there she only finds their body and flees when she realizes that the killer is still in the apartment. She does not recognize that it is Inspector Wörmer, who dips the dead Joyce's fingers in her blood and writes Martin's name on the pillow.

Martin finds out that Inspector Wörmer was the predecessor of his job who was fired because of necrophilia. The latter visits him in the pathology department and announces his arrest. Kalinka wants to warn Martin, but she meets him when he, provoked by Wörmer, knocks him to the ground with a baseball bat that Martin always carries with him for his safety. Wörmer shouts: “He's gone mad” and runs out of the morgue, followed by the confused Kalinka into another room. Wörmer locks the door and overpowers Kalinka first, then Martin, who enters the room. When Jens arrives at the pathology department with another policeman, Wörmer kills his colleague and chains Jens to a metal pipe with handcuffs. Jens cuts off part of his hand in order to free himself from the handcuffs, grabs the dead policeman's pistol and can shoot Wörmer before he can work on his friends with surgical tools. At the end there is a double wedding between Martin and Kalinka and Jens and Lotte. Even before the pastor appears, Martin jokes whether Jens would dare to say no at the crucial moment. Jens actually denies the incorrectly posed question of the pastor whether he would like to marry Kalinka. The film ends with general laughter and quick organ music in the church.

criticism

“ With his debut film, Danish director Ole Bornedal succeeded in creating a gripping, atmospherically densely staged thriller with lots of horror elements. The viewer is constantly led on the wrong track. In addition, the work impresses with a strong pinch of black humor. In its home country, 'Nightwatch' became the most successful film of the year and even hit mega-hits like 'Philadelphia' and 'Schindler's List'. In 1998 Bornedal staged 'Freeze - Nightmare Night Watch', a much weaker US remake of his own debut. "

“Atmospheric and stylishly staged horror film with a nightmarish showdown that builds its tension less from ostensible shock effects than from the development of the characters and their behavior. For friends of the genre. "

“Cleverly constructed, with black humor and exquisite horror effects: The Dane Ole Bornedal made a grandiose directorial debut that quickly became an insider tip in German cinemas. At the Cannes Film Festival, the shocker was even greeted with applause. The sequence in which the memorial to the Danish national poet Hans Christian Andersen is desecrated, however, did not find his compatriots very funny.

Remake

In 1997 the film was remade with Ewan McGregor in the lead role. The film, which was shown in German cinemas under the title Freeze - Nightmare Night Watch , was not well received by the critics and made less box office than the original.
