The Club Naval 1º de Maio (complete: Associação Naval 1º de Maio , the 1 ° stands for Primeiro ) from the city of Figueira da Foz is the fourth oldest still existing sports club in Portugal . In addition to the rowing, sport shooting and beach soccer departments, the professional soccer department is the most important activity of the club. The greatest football successes in the club's history are reaching the semi-finals in the Portuguese Cup competition in the 2002/03 season and promotion to the first division in the 2004/05 season .

history

The Club Naval 1º de Maio was deliberately founded as a workers' association on May 1, 1893, as a direct successor to the dissolved "Associação Naval Figueirense". Although the focus was primarily on "nautical sports", in addition to the important rowing section and swimming, there were also gymnastics, weightlifting, roller skating, Greco-Roman wrestling, shooting, basketball, dancing and, of course, football.

For a long time the soccer team played in the second and third division of Portugal. After she was relegated to the fourth division for the first time in the club's history in the summer of 1992, she started flying high in Portuguese football after the direct resurgence. Between 1995 and 1997, the club narrowly missed the return to the second division as runner-up in the 3.ª Divisão , in 1998 the club returned to the second level after 14 years as the first in its third division season.

Naval 1º de Maio initially played against the direct relegation and held in the first year only one point above the relegation places. Also in the following seasons, the club mainly occupied places in the lower midfield of the league. In the 2002/03 season, the club finally caught the eye. On the one hand, the team played for promotion to the first division, on the other hand, it was a cup fright. At the end of the season, fourth in the league, two points were missing to move up to the top duo FC Alverca and Rio Ave FC in the elite series instead of CF Estrela Amadora . In the cup, the team eliminated Sporting Braga and in the quarter-finals away Sporting Lisbon from the competition, but the semi-final game was lost to FC Porto .

After an eighth place in the summer of 2004 Naval 1º de Maio rose in the following year as second in the table together with FC Paços de Ferreira and CF Estrela Amadora for the first time in the first division. There the team initially played against relegation, before the best result in the club's history to date was achieved in the 2009/10 season with eighth place in the table. In addition, the club reached the semi-finals of the Portuguese Cup again in the course of the season, but was eliminated in their own stadium against the surprise team of third division GD Chaves .

The 2010/11 season ended the club in 16th place and rose to the second division ( Segunda League ). The targeted direct resurgence in the 2011/12 season was missed in the end with fourth place in the table. After financial problems and relegation again, the club played in the 2013/14 season in the Campeonato Nacional de Seniores , the third division.
