The Neue Traunsteiner Hütte is an Alpine Club hut of the Traunstein section of the German Alpine Club at 1570  m above sea level. NHN on the Reiter Alm in the Berchtesgaden Alps not far from the border between Bavaria and the Salzburg region . The shelter is sometimes called the Karl-Merkenschlager-Haus (named after Karl Merkenschlager ) and is located in the municipality of Schneizlreuth in the Berchtesgaden National Park . It is a central base for mountaineers who want to climb the summit on the Reiter Alm. Only a few hundred meters away is the Alte Traunsteiner Hütte on Austrian soil, which is not open to the public and is now used as a training facility for the Traunstein Section. The new shelter was built in 1938 and was last renovated in 1984.
