Niederaula is the largest of eight districts of the market town of the same name Niederaula in the eastern Hessian district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg and is the seat of the municipal administration.

Almost 2,800 people live in the Niederaula district, which is roughly half the population of the entire municipality. It is located in the northern part of the municipality, immediately northwest of the confluence of the auditorium with the Fulda . The 403 m high Rehkuppe rises to the north of the village , while the Hattenbach flows into the auditorium in the west . Direct neighboring towns are Mengshausen about 1 km southeast and Hattenbach and Kleba each about 3 km west and northwest, the district town of Bad Hersfeld is about 12 km northeast.

The town center with the former court from 1534 and the baroque church built in 1775 is well worth seeing.

The Niederaula junction of the A 7 is about 3 km south of the village, and the Kirchheim junction is 4 km northwest . In the village, the B 454 meets the B 62 .

Niederaula was the junction of the Bad Hersfeld – Treysa and Niederaula – Alsfeld railway lines , but today only freight trains run there. The high-speed line Hanover – Würzburg runs past the town to the west.

The place was first mentioned in a document in 779 as Oulaho . It was part of a donation from Charlemagne to the Benedictine monastery in Hersfeld . On December 31, 1970, was in the course of administrative reform in Hesse until then independent municipality Mengshausen voluntarily incorporated . On December 31, 1971, Hattenbach, Kleba, Niederjossa, and Solms were added. On August 1, 1972, Kerspenhausen followed with Roßbach and Hilperhausen, which was incorporated there on December 31, 1970.

On August 22, 1977 at around 3 p.m. the village was hit by a dam break in the dam on Lake Ibrasee . The flood content of 500,000 m³ of water poured through the valley in a tidal wave up to three meters high.
