Niklas Westberg (born April 1, 1979 ) is a former Swedish football player . The goalkeeper , who has played his career exclusively in Sweden so far, rose to the Allsvenskan with IFK Norrköping and IF Brommapojkarna .

Career

Westberg played in his youth at IF Brommapojkarna, which is known for its youth work . In 1997 he switched to AIK in the Allsvenskan as a junior player , but although he was a member of the professional squad, he never played in the first team. Therefore, the club awarded him in 1999 to the second division IK Sirius , who relegated to the third division at the end of the season. In 2001 he returned to the third-class IF Brommapojkarna. With the club he rose to the Superettan , where he was a regular player with 27 stakes in the 2002 season . For the following season the club signed Kristoffer Björklund, a competitor who pushed him out of the gate.

In the summer of 2003, Westberg moved to third division club Väsby IK . When the latter merged with FC Café Opera to form Väsby United at the end of 2004 and the latter took over the starting position in the Superettan, he was again one of the regulars in the second division. In the 2006 season, the team around Omar Jawo , Robert Åhman-Persson and Walid Atta only occupied one relegation place and rose to the third division after a draw and a defeat against Westberg's ex-club IK Sirius. He left the club and joined AIK again, where he replaced Nicklas Bergh, who was loaned to Enköpings SK , as a substitute goalkeeper. Again he stayed without league use in the Allsvenskan, so that he returned to Väsby United after his one-year contract expired. Under coach Mikael Stahre , the team was promoted again immediately, Westberg fought back to his regular place. At the end of 2008, Thomas Lagerlöf took over the management of the team, under whom he was used in 23 of the 30 league games in the 2009 second division season .

In December 2009 Westberg signed a contract with IFK Norrköping . As a regular player, he rose to the side of Shpetim Hasani , Daniel Bamberg and Viktor Rönneklev at the end of 2010 in the Allsvenskan. In preparation for the first division season in 2011 , the previous substitute Abbas Hassan ousted him . It was only when this was canceled due to an injury that he made his first appearances in the Swedish elite series. His expiring contract was not extended, so that he was courted by various clubs, especially from the Stockholm area, after eleven first division games.

In November 2011 Westberg joined his former club IF Brommapojkarna in the Superettan, where he signed a two-year contract with an option for another season. Here he was again an undisputed regular player, the substitute Davor Blazevic only made two appearances during the second division season in 2012 . Under coach Roberth Björknesjö , he rose to the side of Pablo Piñones-Arce , Andreas Eriksson and Nabil Bahoui for the second time in his career in the Allsvenskan. He ended his playing career on the 2013 season .
