Nikolai Alexandrowitsch Tokarew ( Russian: Николай Александрович Токарев ; born May 21, 1983 in Moscow ) is a Russian pianist.

Life

The son of a pianist and a cellist , Tokarev began his musical training in 1988 at the Gnessin Institute in Moscow , which he graduated with honors in 2001. At the age of fourteen he went on tour in Japan and in 2000 he was a prizewinner at the 10th Eurovision Young Musicians in Bergen , Norway . In 2003 he won the international Kissinger Piano Olympics competition . He continued his studies from 2004 to 2006 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester with Dina Parakhina, where he graduated with a gold medal in 2004. As a post graduate he studied in Düsseldorf with Barbara Szczepanska at the Robert Schumann University .

In September 2006, Tokarev received the Orpheum Public Award . At the Concours Géza Anda in Zurich that same year, he won 2nd prize and the audience prize. He has worked with the Moscow Philharmonic , the Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Vladimir Spiwakov , the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester, the English Chamber Orchestra , the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and the Camerata Salzburg .

His debut in Germany was recognized in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit as well as national daily newspapers. In addition, ARD , ZDF and BR produced film portraits. The music critic of the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Helmut Mauró , traced Tokarew's talent and talents in portraits, reviews and interviews.

Tokarew has made guest appearances at the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival , the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Rheingau Music Festival , the Kissinger Summer , the Davos Festival and the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival . He has given concerts with the Camerata Salzburg , the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich , the National Philharmonic of Russia and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra , among others .

On October 27, 2009, Tokarew received the Prix ​​Montblanc from Justus Frantz in Berlin, endowed with 10,000 dollars .

Tokarew lives in Düsseldorf, Moscow and Dubai.

Discography (selection)

Tokarew's first European label-bound CD (plus bonus CD) “No. 1 ”was published in 2007 by Sony Classical with works by Chopin , Bach / Siloti , Schubert , Liszt , Rosenblatt , Mussorgsky and Prokofiev . For this debut album Tokarew was awarded the ECHO-Klassik 2008 as best young artist (piano).

Works by Rameau , Debussy , Ravel and Franck can be found on his second CD with Sony Classical, entitled "French Album" .

In 2010 he recorded Tchaikovsky's first and Rachmaninov's third piano concerto.

In 2014, the Hommage to Horowitz followed with works by Scarlatti , Cimarosa , Liszt, Chopin, Scrjabin and Rosenblatt.

In 2018 Tokarev published the violin sonata and the 24 preludes in the version for piano and violin by Dmitri Shostakovich at Naxos together with the violinist Sergei Dogadin .
