Nikolai Anatoljewitsch Watolin ( Russian: Николай Анатольевич Ватолин ; born November 13, 1926 in Sverdlovsk ; † August 11, 2018 ) was a Russian physical chemist and university professor .

Life

Watolin's father, who died early, was an employee of the Uralmash engineering works in Sverdlovsk. Watolin studied in Sverdlovsk at the chair of steel metallurgy of the metallurgical faculty of the Urals Polytechnic Institute with graduation in 1949. He then worked first in the steel laboratory in the Urals plant for heavy engineering and then from 1950 in the Metallurgical Institute of the Urals department of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR). His teacher there was Oleg Alexeyevich Jessin . 1954 Watolin defended his candidate dissertation . In 1966 he received his doctorate in technical sciences . He was director of this institute from 1968 to 1998. In 1970 he was elected a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR. In 1973 he became a professor at the Department of Chemistry at the Urals State Mountain University in Sverdlovsk.

The focus of Watolin's work was on the structure-sensitive properties of liquid metals and alloys, and in particular their electrical properties . He investigated non-stoichiometric oxide melts with transition metal ions . Under his leadership, a high was the temperature - diffractometer developed to the atomic investigate structures and the atomic interactions in metallic and oxide melts. The interaction of the solid and liquid phase in iron-based melts during crystallization was also investigated. At the end of the 1970s, thermodynamic computer modeling of multi-component inorganic systems was introduced as a new research direction . Other focal points were the complex use of metallurgical raw materials in the Urals, the use of the residues of the processes of steel and non-ferrous metallurgy and the extraction of vanadium from converter slag in metallurgy factory chusovoy and NTMK .

In 1981 Watolin became a real member of the AN-SSSR. 1983–1988 he was first vice-chairman of the presidium of the science center Ufa of the AN-SSSR. He was Chairman of the Scientific Council for the Physico-Chemical Basics of Metallurgical Processes and Vice-Chairman of the Scientific Council for Metallurgy and Metallurgy .

Watolin's son Anatol Nikolayevich is a doctor of chemical sciences and a professor.
