Nikolaikirche (Plön)
The Nikolaikirche in Plön in Holstein Switzerland in Schleswig-Holstein is the main Evangelical Lutheran church in the city. The church building on the market square, originally built in 1691 in the Baroque style , burned down almost completely after a lightning strike in 1864 . From 1866 to 1868 the Nikolaikirche was rebuilt in the neo-Romanesque style.
history
The Nikolaikirche in Plön had several previous buildings. As early as 1150, a predominantly wooden church was built on this site under Bishop Vizelin . In 1691, a representative baroque church with a cross-shaped floor plan was inaugurated there under Duke Johann Adolf .
On June 24, 1864, the church building burned down almost completely after a lightning strike, and the interior of the church was largely destroyed. Two years later, under the Prussian building officer Hermann Georg Krüger (1815-1897), the reconstruction began, which was completed in 1868. The cruciform floor plan and some foundation walls of the baroque predecessor building were adopted, but the building as a whole was built in the neo-Romanesque style.
In the Second World War , the walls and the vault of the building in particular were damaged. Therefore, the church was extensively renovated in the 1960s and 1980s . The Nikolaikirche is a listed building and is one of the Plön cultural monuments .
description
The Nikolaikirche is a hall church with a barrel vault , which was built mainly from brick in the neo-Romanesque style . The outer facades of the cross-shaped church building are structured by arched windows, on the west side the building is surmounted by a tower around 60 meters high .
The interior of the church is also characterized by the arched windows and the barrel vault, which is unusual for a neo-Romanesque church, which means that the interior does not have any pillars or columns . Therefore the nave and the transept make a particularly bright, high and wide impression. The church windows, originally by Johann Jacob Achelius (1794–1870), and the vaulted ceiling were redesigned in the 1960s by the artist Carl Frey from Ahrensbök . The windows were decorated with motifs from the Easter story , the vault was painted with a mosaic in light and golden colors.
A special feature is the stalls in the transepts of the church, in which rising stands and galleries were built in 1985 .
organ
The organ of the Nikolaikirche from 1967 comes from the workshop of the organ builder Alfred Führer in Wilhelmshaven . It has slider chests with mechanical play and electrical Register contracture . The instrument has 38 sounding registers , which are distributed over three manuals and pedal . In 1996/1997 it was completely overhauled by Kurt Quathamer.
