  • The Niue Fono Ekepule ( English Niue Assembly ) is the unicameral parliament of the autonomous region of Niue , which is in free association with New Zealand . The 20 members are to one in 14 single-member constituencies and the other in a nationwide Personenwahl chosen for the other six deputies.

    history

The assembly emerged from the Island Council of Niue, created in 1915 by the Cook Islands Act. With the restructuring of the Niuean Assembly in 1959, Parliament gradually gained more rights. With the constitution and the full introduction of self-government in 1974, parliament got its current function.

    choice

Parliament is elected by majority vote, with each voter having two votes. He gives one vote to a candidate on a national list. The six candidates with the most votes get a seat in the assembly. In addition, every voter can choose a candidate for the village; each village represents an electoral district, so that another 14 MPs move in using this procedure.

Any New Zealand citizen who has resided on Niue for at least three months is eligible to vote. In order to be able to stand up for election, in addition to the requirements for the right to vote , it is necessary to be resident on Niue for a total of 12 months.
