No Roots ( English literally means "no roots"; mutatis mutandis to "without origin") is the first extended play in Germany living pop singer Alice Merton .

Creation and artwork

All songs in the Extended Play were written by Merton, together with changing co-authors. Merton wrote most of the songs together with the German musician Nicolas Rebscher. Merton and Rebscher wrote three songs together. Furthermore, the composers and songwriters Dave Bassett, Michelle Leonard , Laila Samuels and the German producer quartet Beatgees (consisting of: Philip Böllhoff, Hannes Büscher, Sipho Sililo and David Vogt) each provide an author participation. All tracks on the album were produced by Rebscher. Merton herself was directly involved in two productions and in one as a co-producer. In addition to the two, the American music producer Bassett and the Beatgees are each involved in a production. Merton's manager Paul Grauwinkel was the executive producer. The mastering took place at TrueBusyness Mastering in Berlin under the direction of Sascha "Busy" Bühren. Rebscher was mainly responsible for mixing, arranging and mastering. The piece Lash Out was mixed by the Romanian-US American producer Serban Ghenea.

On the cover of the Extended Play, in addition to the artist name and song title, only Merton's upper body can be seen from the side against a black background. She wears a gold top that was designed by Susann Bosslau. The photography and the artwork for the cover image are from Merton's manager Grauwinkel. This is the same cover image as for the single No Roots of the same name . The cover image was presented for the first time on November 7, 2016 in the social networks .

Publication and promotion

The No Roots EP was first released on February 3, 2017 for download. As a physical sound carrier, the Extended Play was released around six months later as a CD on August 4, 2017. On October 6, 2017, the EP was released on a 12 ″ vinyl record in Germany. A new edition of the album was released for download in the United States on April 6, 2018. The regular EP consists of four new studio recordings, the new edition of five. The EP was released under Merton's own music label Paper Plane Records and in the United States under the music label Mom + Pop Music. The distribution was carried out by BMG Rights Management and Budde Music.

In order to apply for the EP and for yourself, a tour of all radio stations in Germany followed, including MDR Jump , Bayern 3 and MDR Sputnik . In the UK, Merton was part of the BBC Introducing radio show on March 18, 2017. On television, she appeared on prime-time TV on the ProSieben show Schlag den Henssler , where she sang a medley of Hit the Ground Running and No Roots . Furthermore, there were some appearances on the German music channel VIVA . There she appeared twice within a short time in the chart show VIVA Top 100 . On February 27, 2017, she presented an acoustic version of Hit the Ground Running and an acoustic version of No Roots on April 13, 2017 . Merton also played an acoustic version of No Roots in the music show VIVA Elevator Music . On February 9, 2018, she appeared with No Roots on the American late-night show The Tonight Show . Another live performance with No Roots in Germany took place during the 2018 Echo Awards .

In May 2017, No Roots became Vodafone's official promotional song . The song accompanied their commercial and was thus played in various commercial breaks. In addition, the song was heard in an episode of the American television series The Blacklist .

content

All the song lyrics on the album are in English and, like the compositions, were written by Merton himself, who wrote the pieces together with changing co-authors. Musically, the songs move in the field of pop-rock . The EP consists of four or five new, previously unreleased studio recordings. The EP originally consisted of only four titles. The new edition of the EP from 2018 has been expanded to include the piece Lash Out .

Reviews

Ulrike Meyer-Potthoff from the German online magazine terrorverlag.com rates the EP positively. There are four tracks to be heard by “Miss Merton” and after the first few bars of the pre-release single No Roots she knows that she is dealing with a “truly powerful voice” lady who also has a lot of “fire in the ass”. Not only to the “rhythmic” opener should be danced; After a somewhat quieter debut, the subsequent Jealousy would also go in the leg and especially the monumental hit the Ground Running on the dance floor. If you didn't really know who Merton's sound and voice reminded you of, now you have the insight that Florence Welch ( Florence + the Machine ) could have been godmother here. There is still Lie to My Face , which with a “solemn prelude” would flash a brief association with Lana Del Rey , but overall it is less melancholy. Merton would by no means skimp on emotions; bring the same across much more life-affirming than is sometimes the case with her American colleague. The No Roots EP is bursting with soul and great melodies that are performed with a lot of passion and talent. A wonderful appetizer from a woman who founded her own music label for her songs, designed her own unique fashion together with Susann Bosslau and meticulously helped develop the production of her music videos.

Awards

On September 8, 2017, Merton was twice awarded the Pop Culture Prize in the categories of “ Most Hopeful Newcomer” and “Favorite Solo Artist”. In January 2018 Merton received the European Border Breakers Award for the most successful European act from Germany for the No Roots EP . On April 12th, 2018 Merton was awarded an ECHO Pop in the category “Artist Pop national”. Merton was able to prevail against Yvonne Catterfeld , Julia Engelmann , Kerstin Ott and Lina Larissa Strahl .
