Nof HaGalil ( Hebrew נוֹף הַגָּלִיל 'Prospect Galilee' , meaning 'Prospect Galilee' ) is a city in the northern district of Israel in the historical Galilee landscape with 41,169 inhabitants (2018). Until 2019 it was called Nazareth-Illit ( Hebrew נָצְרַת עִלִּית Natsrat ʿIllīt , German 'Ober-Nazareth' ). In contrast to the older sister city of Nazareth , in which mainly Arab Israelis live, Nof HaGalil, founded in 1957, is predominantly inhabited by Jews . Over half of the residents of the developing city are immigrants. The administration of the northern district is based in Nof HaGalil.

geography

Nof HaGalil is located above Nazareth and 38 kilometers from Haifa on the Mediterranean Sea and 24 kilometers from Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee .

history

The city emerged in the 1950s, and in 1957 the first 300 settlers moved to today's city. Originally the city was called Kiryat Natzrat or Vered HaGalil , with official recognition in the 1960s it was named Nazareth-Illit . In 1961 the city had 4,291 inhabitants, in 1983 there were already 21,248 inhabitants. Menachem Ariav was mayor from 1977 to 2008 .

In 2014, 64.4% Jewish and 21.6% Arab residents lived in the city (14.4% Christians and 7.2% Muslims).

In May 2019, the city administration decided to change the city name to Nof HaGalil ('View of Galilee') to avoid confusion with the neighboring city, which was implemented after a survey among the city's residents in June.

The football club Hapoel Nof HaGalil plays in the second-class Leumit league and plays its home games in Etztadion Green (Hebrew איצטדיון גרין).
