geography

Crossing of the Mühlkanal with the Schlierbach

Source and history

The longest and most inflowing source arm of the Schlierbach is the Nonnenbach . This rises in the Löwenstein mountains about 1.6 km east of the Löwenstein hamlet of Lichtenstern , in the inner corner of a forest path serpentine a good 200 meters north of the junction of the K 2107 called "Klosterstrasse" from the B 39 . The young brook runs to the west through its wooded blade , which deepens quickly and into which the K 2107 enters from the left at the foot of its valley slope at the hamlet mentioned, accompanied by the Reisacher Bach flowing there . In front of Lichtenstern, a former monastery on a low northern mountain spur, the stream emerges from the forest, turns to the northwest and flows into the pond of the monastery mill. After the lake and the mill, it immediately takes up the cloister stream from the left , which comes from the other side of the spur and finally flowed parallel to the valley floor, which has now become a small floodplain. Immediately afterwards, the Lumpenlochbach joins it, coming from the same side and, like the two previous ones, arose on or near the upper edge of the Löwenstein mountains.

After about half of the entire length of the stream, the Nonnenbach- Oberlauf turns to the north, between the Löwenstein residential area Frankenhof and the hamlet of Reisach, which is also part of it, and both of which are slightly above the foot of the slope, and then flows through a flat and here quite wide valley basin which is now only separated by a flat range of hills from the larger and roughly parallel Sulm basin in the west, while the nearby Aubach in the east accompanies it. At the southern edge of Weiler , now in the Obersulmer district, this right companion flows, immediately afterwards the brook flows through a flood retention basin and then enters the Weilers soft area, here only about 200 m from the bank of the sulm-flooded Breitenauer Lake in the west. The park of Weiler Castle is on his right, a little further away the village center on a small hill, around which the brook in the village area runs in a left curve. After crossing underneath the K 2108, which replaces the K 2107 as the valley road, the Schlierbach- Oberlauf flows from the right and gives the name to the following lower course.

Immediately afterwards a short mill channel branches off to the left, which feeds a mill pond and then flows back in the local area. Before the Weilerberg and Galgenberg slopes on the right, the Schlierbach runs less than a kilometer to the northwest and takes in the outflow of the Breitenauer See from the left about a hundred meters before the end of its course . A 0.7 km long Mühlkanal on the right edge of the valley to Affalterbach , which continues north-west, is now dry. At its outlet, the Schlierbach bends to the left under the Galgenberg and flows fifty meters further from the right into the Sulm, which itself has little water here .

Catchment area

The Schlierbach has a catchment area of 6.2 km², to which the Nonnenbach upper course contributes about two thirds, the Schlierbach upper and lower course each about half of the rest. Half of it lies in the east of the rather shallow southeast erosion bay that the Sulm created with its tributaries in the Löwenstein Mountains, and half on the edge of the stratification level in the southeast knee of the mountain plateau into which the Nonnenbach and its left tributaries have cut their notch valleys .

In the southeast and south beyond the watershed drawn by the B 39 on the northern edge of the Löwenstein mountains there is the catchment area of the "Spiegelberger" Lauter , whose own source is only about half a kilometer south of the Nonnenbach . Here is also the highest point of the drained area on a crest between the B 39 and the Hohlenstein at about 510  m above sea level. NN . At the Löwensteiner Klinik the watershed bends to the north, on the other side the Sulm competes , the dividing ridge has only a hill height from the Frankenhof at the foot of the last plateau spur Wolfertsberg ( 431  m above sea level ), towards the Breitenauer See it is only one Bump.

In the north, the watershed rises from the mouth eastwards quickly up the Affaltracher Galgenberg to just over 250  m above sea level. NN and then runs on a narrow ridge just before the nearby Michelbach- Oberlauf Wilhelmsbach to the south over Eichelberg (approx. 300  m above sea level ) and the immediately adjoining Gutberg ( 354.6  m above sea level ) to a little east of Reisach. From there the border rises on the ridge of the Reisacher Berg eastwards from about 440  m above sea level. NN to the Gräfischen Bergle ( 506.5  m above sea level ), also here with the Wilhelmsbach as the northern competitor. A short border section of less than half a kilometer at the height reached back to the summit at Höhlenstein separates from the Bernbach , which is the only competitor that drains not over the Sulm , but over the Kocher to the Neckar .

Inflow system

From a hydrographic point of view, the left, much longer, higher source and inflowing Nonnenbach branch is the upper reaches of the Schlierbach . On the other hand, according to the view expressed in the same name for the lower course, the right branch is considered the upper course. Therefore, these three stream sections are all shown separately here.

Tributaries listed from source to mouth. Stream lengths according to LUBW-FG10, lake areas according to LUBW-SG10 (each data set entries), names according to the background map, heights preferably according to the relevant numerical information on it, otherwise according to the contour map there.

geology

The course of the Schlierbach and its upper reaches Nonnenbach lies entirely in the Mittelkeuper .

The longer Nonnenbach upper course rises in the Stubensandstein cover layer of the Löwensteiner Mountains ( Löwenstein Formation ), its tributaries flowing from the south from near the upper layer edge above Reisach arise in the transition area to the Upper Bunter Marln below ( Mainhardt Formation ). Approximately from the Klostermühle it runs in the Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld formation ), up to its north bend near Reisach, accompanied by a not narrow reed sandstone leveling surface ( Stuttgart formation ) on the left slope. Below Reisach, the Quaternary valley filling of floodplain sediments , which already began at Lichtenstern, widens far to the right beyond the parallel course of the Aubach river, while the left slope lies to the left of the course of the Quaternary Loess .

The Schlierbachs- Oberlauf, on the other hand, arises significantly deeper near the border between Kieselsandstein ( Hassberge Formation ) and Unteren Bunten Mergeln ( Steigerwald Formation ), and enters the Gipskeuper a little northeast of Reisach, whose lower districts are on a small northern reed sandstone tongue Loess is located on its left (west wind) leeward slope.

Large parts of Weiler lie in a wide valley filling zone, which stretches somewhat narrower to the confluence of the Schlierbach in the Sulm , which is also still in the Gipskeuper area. Here on the lower course, loess also covers the flat left valley slope. n The eastern tip of the Nonnenbach catchment area ends at a hilltop, a small marl island (Trossingen Formation) and the northernmost occurrence of this layer in the Keuperberge Mountains of Württemberg.
