Nquthu [ nˈǃutʰu ] ( English Nquthu Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the Umzinyathi district of South Africa in the KwaZulu-Natal province . The municipality's administrative headquarters are in Nquthu . Siyabonga Mabilabila Kunene has been mayor since 2017. The IFP provides the minority government in the local council.
The name of the community is a Zulu term and means "the back of the head". Cetshwayo gave one of his chiefs the order to keep his back free from the British and thus prevent them from being able to "hit him on the head from behind" (esiNquthu) . Nquthu covers an area of 1962 square kilometers.
geography
Nquthu is one of four parishes in the district and borders AbaQulusi , eMadlangeni , Nkandla and Ulundi . It is located in the northeast of the district. The Buffalo flows through the community area, which is very uneven. The height at which the municipality is located varies between 900 and 1500 meters above sea level.
Nquthu Town and Nondweni are the only city-like centers in the otherwise rural community.
population
In 2011 the community had 165,307 inhabitants. 99.7% of them were black.
The first language was 89.7% isiZulu , 6.5% Sesotho , 0.9% isiNdebele and 0.8% English.
economy
In terms of transport, the municipality is connected via the R68 , which connects Ulundi and Newcastle / Dundee , and the R33 in the north of Nquthu. Nquthu City is the administrative, commercial and service center of the municipality. The municipality is, however, dependent on the cities in the wider area: Melmoth , Vryheid , Newcastle and especially Dundee. Higher value goods can be purchased there. The cities also provide jobs for many residents of Nquthu.
In the city of Nquthu there are branches of many state institutions and agencies, such as the ministries of education, agriculture and the environment, economy and health. Agriculture is practiced on the watercourses of the Buffalo and its tributaries and in flat or only gently sloping terrain, but mainly for personal use. The steeper areas in the center of the parish and in the north are used as grazing land. In the south, the terrain is usually too steep to be used for agriculture. Forestry is partly carried out around the cities.
Attractions
- The Isandlwana Memorial is a memorial to the Battle of Isandlwana during the Zulu War . The battle re-enactment is a major tourist attraction for the community.
