Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From the First Psychedelic Era, 1965–1968 is a sampler of American pop and rock songs from the mid to late 1960s, often referred to as garage rock . The sampler is regarded by many authors and music critics as being decisive for the development of punk music .

History of origin

The double album was put together by Jac Holzman , founder of Elektra Records , and Lenny Kaye , who later became the guitarist of the Patti Smith Group . Nuggets was released on Elektra Records in 1972 and re-released on Sire Records in 1976 with a new cover . The accompanying text, written by Lenny Kaye, contains one of the earliest mentions of the term " punk rock ".

Many of the songs were top 40 hits in the US. This includes more than a third of the original nuggets, and Rhino's expanded box also contained million- sellers such as Incense and Peppermints by Strawberry Alarm Clock (1st place), Louie, Louie by The Kingsmen (2nd place), Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs (2nd place), Little Bit O'Soul from The Music Explosion (2nd place) and Time Won't Let Me from The Outsiders (5th place).

reception

The simplified, stripped-down music of bands such as the 13th Floor Elevators , Electric Prunes , Blues Magoos and the Chocolate Watchband met with open ears from the young musicians of the 1970s. Nuggets received good reviews and reached number 196 on the list of " The 500 best albums of all time (according to Rolling Stone) ". Unlike the other albums on this list, however, it took a long time for Nuggets to appear on CD. It wasn't until 1998 that Rhino Records released a CD with the original title order and the original accompanying text, but added three more CDs with 91 additional tracks. Rhino Records was also responsible for the second part of the sampler, which was released in 2001 and covers the years 1964 to 1969 in Great Britain . This time, too, the collection is a box with four CDs.

Jon Savage names Nuggets a major influence in his book England's Dreaming , on the history of the British punk movement, and places it alongside the Stooges -LP Raw Power .
