history

The place Oberölfen, located on the former Landstrasse, Poststrasse and Heerstrasse (today Bundesstrasse 8 ), was first mentioned in a document in 1427; Another mention was contained in Hilgenroth's book of miracles , in which the donation of Merkel van Oberoelffe is listed. For many years the place belonged to the parish of Birnbach .

Until the middle of the 17th century, Oberölfen belonged to the county of Sayn . After the introduction of the Reformation in the county of Sayn, the inhabitants were first Lutheran and later reformed . After the state division of the County of Sayn in the 17th century, Oberölfen was part of the County of Sayn-Hachenburg .

For centuries Oberölfen was a border town, from 1667 to 1803 it was a border station between the counties Sayn-Altenkirchen and Sayn-Hachenburg . In 1797, Andreas Balzar , the Balzar von Flammersfeld , attacked the French on the Cölnische Straße between Oberölfen and Birnbach. In 1799 the county was inherited by the princes of Nassau-Weilburg . In connection with the formation of the Rhine Confederation , the region and with it Oberölfen came to the newly established Duchy of Nassau in 1806 .

Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the area was ceded to the Kingdom of Prussia . In Prussian times the place belonged to the mayor's office Weyerbusch , in which Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen was mayor, and to the school association Birnbach. After discussing the construction of a separate school building, the local council decided on September 17, 1931 to form a comprehensive school association with the nearby Helmenzen. By order of the district president in Koblenz on October 6, 1938, the municipality of Oberölfen was incorporated into the municipality of Helmenzen with effect from April 1, 1939, which is now part of the Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld community .
