The Ocongate District is located in the Quispicanchi Province of the Cusco Region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 948 km². At the 2017 census, 17,466 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 11,111, in 2007 13,578. The district administration is located in the small town of Ocongate at an altitude of 3540 m with 2386 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ocongate is located 26 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Urcos .
Geographical location
The Ocongate District is located in the central west of the Quispicanchi Province. The district extends over the headwaters of the Río Mapacho (upper reaches of the Río Paucartambo / Río Yavero), which drains the area to the northwest. The district is framed in the northeast, east and southeast by the mountain ranges of the partly glaciated Cordillera Vilcanota . In the northeast are the peaks Jolljepunco ( 5522 m ) and Cinajara ( 5471 m ). In the southeast rises the Ausangate , with 6384 m the highest elevation of the mountain range. In the east of the district, two pass roads cross a ridge and connect the district with the headwaters of the Río Araza . In the district there is the glacial rim lake Laguna Sigrenacocha .
The Ocongate district borders in the west on the districts Cusipata , Quiquijana and Ccatca , in the north on the district Ccarhuayo , in the northeast on the district Kosñipata ( province Paucartambo ), in the east on the district Marcapata and in the south on the district Pitumarca ( province Canchis ) .
