The Olšava (often Olšava ) is a 50 km long river and a tributary of the linksufriger Hornád in the east of Slovakia . It runs through the area of Okresy Prešov and Košice-okolie . Due to the parallel course with the Torysa further to the west, tributaries on the right-hand side are only slightly developed, so the catchment area extends largely over the western side of the Slanské vrchy Mountains .

The river rises on the western slope of Slanské vrchy below the mountain Chabzdová ( 862  m nm ), at an altitude of approx. 675  m nm.First , it flows southwest through the municipality of Lesíček , then it turns to the southeast, past the place Tuhriná and the left bank of Jedlovec increases at Opiná . Shortly after that, the Košická kotlina basin begins and the river begins to meander and generally flow south. It divides the two parts of the municipality of Kecerovce from each other and continues to flow past the towns of Boliarov , Bačkovík , Čakanovce and Bidovce , before receiving the most important tributary at Trurďošík , the Trstianka brook on the right . There is also a small reservoir there.

Another important tributary, the left bank Svinický potok , flows north-west of Ďurkov into the Olšava and in the further course it touches the place Olšovany on the right bank. At Ruskov and Vyšný Čaj the river changes its direction of flow to the southwest and runs in the area of the places Blažice , Nižný Čaj and Bohdanovce . Then it flows south again, between Nižná Myšľa on the right and Vyšná Myšľa on the left bank. The river turns west through a semicircle and flows into the Hornád between Nižná Myšľa and Ždaňa , just a few kilometers downstream from the confluence with the Torysa.
