In the judo competitions at the 2020 Olympic Summer Games , each nation can provide a maximum of 14 judokas (one per weight class). As the host country, the Japanese delegation is entitled to a quota for each of the 14 weight classes. In addition, 20 quota places are awarded by wildcard .
All other athletes have the chance to qualify via the world rankings of the International Judo Federation with the deadline May 25, 2020. The top 18 best athletes in each class qualify directly, but only one athlete per nation can qualify per weight class. If several athletes qualify, the National Olympic Committee may decide which of these athletes will receive the quota place.
There are also continental qualification places. These are given to the best placed athletes. Since only one athlete per nation is allowed to qualify here, 100 different NOKs will qualify in this way.

Mixed
In order to qualify for the mixed team competition, a nation must provide at least one individual athlete in the following categories:
- Men (super light weight, half light weight or lightweight)
- Men (lightweight, light-middleweight or middleweight)
- Men (middleweight, light heavyweight or heavyweight)
- Women (super light weight, half light weight, lightweight)
- Women (lightweight, light-middleweight or middleweight)
- Women (middleweight, light-heavyweight or heavyweight)
