Onesti [ oneʃtʲ ] (1965-1990 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej ) is a town in the district of Bacau in the historical region West of Moldova in Romania .

Geographical location

The city of Oneşti is located in the Trotuş Valley in the eastern foothills of the Culmea-Petricica Mountains, a mountain range of the Eastern Carpathians . At the confluence of the Oituz and Caşin rivers in the Trotuş , the Sfântu Gheorghe – Siculeni – Adjud railway and on the European route 574 from Bacău to Braşov ( Kronstadt ), Oneşti is about 50 kilometers southwest of the district capital Bacău.

history

As early as the 15th century, a crater could be found on the site of the “modern” Oneşti.

At the end of the 19th century, the place was composed of the community center Oneşti and the hamlets Filipeşti , Răcăuțul and Buciumi . With the agrarian reform of 1864 233 farmers came to Oneşti to own land. From 1953, a village was systematically built up, which was named after the communist head of state Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej in March 1965 . After a kind of planning on the drawing board, companies from the oil processing industry, chemicals and synthetic rubber were settled.

After the fall of the Ceaușescu government, the city was officially renamed Onești again in May 1996.

population

In 2002, 51,416 people lived in the area of ​​today's city. Among them were 50,519 Romanians , 545 Roma , 206 were Hungarians , 50 Greeks , 24 Romania German u. a. By 2011, the population had dropped to 39,172. 35,368 of them were Romanians, 252 were Roma, 55 Hungarians, 21 Greeks. Nine Ukrainians and eight Germans were also registered.
