Oscar von Gebhardt

Oscar Leopold von Gebhardt (born June 22, 1844 in Wesenberg , Estonia , † May 9, 1906 in Leipzig ) was a German Protestant theologian and librarian .

Life

Gebhardt lost his mother at the age of two. When he was four years old, his father (Eduard G., teacher) died. After the death of his parents, he was taken in by his uncle (Ferdinand G., pastor) in St. Johannes ( Estonia ). He attended the Arensburg high school on the island of Ösel . Since 1862 studied Gebhardt in Tartu (where he became a member of Estonia ), Leipzig, Tübingen , Erlangen and Göttingen Theology . After these studies he devoted himself to Greek manuscript studies and the library subject. From May 1875 Gebhardt was a volunteer at the library in Strasbourg . In October 1875 he was appointed assistant at the Leipzig University Library . Gebhardt worked since October 1876 as curator and from January 1877 as sub-librarian in Halle . In January 1880 he went to Göttingen as a sub-librarian and in May 1884 was appointed librarian at the Royal Library in Berlin . Gebhardt received his professorship in January 1889. In September 1891, he took over the printing department of the Royal Library as director. In April 1893 he was made senior librarian at the University Library in Leipzig and honorary professor for books and writing at the University of Leipzig. In May 1901 he was given the title of director of the Leipzig University Library. Since 1896 he was a full member of the Royal Saxon Society of Sciences .

Gebhardt was one of the most important connoisseurs of Greek manuscripts and was an outstanding researcher in the field of the New Testament and early Christian literature. Together with Adolf Harnack , he edited 30 volumes of texts and studies on the history of early Christian literature .
