Kurt Ostbahn
Dr. Kurt Ostbahn , vulgo Ostbahn-Kurti , is a fictional character invented by the copywriter Günter Brödl in jest, who developed a public life of its own. She was personified from 1983 until her preliminary retirement in 2003 by the musician Willi Resetarits . Since August 2011 he has been reviving the fictional character Ostbahn in concerts.
history
In the mid-1970s, a musical review of the year could be heard on the radio station Ö3's Musicbox program . Wolfgang Kos asked his co-moderator Günter Brödl what American suburban musicians like Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes would be called in Vienna . Brödl replied " Ostbahn -Kurti & die Chefpartie".
In 1979 Brödl's play Who Owns Rock 'n' Roll? Premiered. Kurt Ostbahn already had a complete biography in this piece. The character was then embodied by Erich Götzinger . Allegedly Kurt Ostbahn had already produced two out of print LPs, song texts were published in various literary magazines, the Arbeiter-Zeitung published a portrait and the Musicbox broadcast an interview with Kurt Ostbahn.
In order to increase the authenticity of his fictional character, Brödl advertised such as: "Search Ostbahn-Kurti-LPs!" Or sprayed his graffito "Kurt Ostbahn lives!" On motorway bridges . Brödl claimed to be his contact person.
In 1983 Brödl met Willi Resetarits, who was doing socially critical folk with the butterflies at that time ; Resetarits now embodied the character Kurt Ostbahn in public. From then on, Brödl concentrated on the lyrics, Resetarits and band took over the musical part. Brödl translated blues , country and rock classics from various artists into Viennese .
In this context, the many cover versions of Springsteen songs deserve special attention ; What stands out above all is the version of the song Fire , which meant first place in the singles charts for Ostbahn-Kurti:

In 1995 Ostbahn recorded Espresso Rosi, the first album with the combo, which consisted of Stefan Bernheimer (guitar), Klaus Trabitsch (guitar), Roland Guggenbichler (keyboards), Erich Buchebner (bass) and Christian Eigner (drums). In addition, from April 9, 1995, he designed the radio program Trost und Rat by and with Dr. Kurt Ostbahn on Radio Vienna , where he could prove his talent as an entertainer . In 1997 he played the leading role in the film Blutrausch and in 1998 he published a songbook entitled Ostbahn - Auslese .
After Günter Brödl died suddenly on October 10, 2000, at the age of 45, Kurt Ostbahn and the Kombo went on a farewell tour in 2003. On New Year's Eve 2003 Resetarits played the role of Kurt Ostbahn for the last time for the time being.
On the fifth anniversary of Günter Brödl's death, a banner hung on a bridge over the Vienna Belt at the AKH with the inscription “Ostbahn lives!” Neither the responsible municipal department nor the police dismantled the banner. On the evening of October 10, 2005, the banner was removed again and later handed over to Willi Resetarits . The banner was last seen on October 11, 2010 in the Orpheum in Vienna at the presentation of the entire Ostbahn work.
