Karin Schäfer (born September 21, 1963 in Mödling ) is an Austrian stage artist, founder and director of the Karin Schäfer Figures Theater - Visual Theater Productions.

Based on the techniques of classical puppetry, Karin Schäfer developed an art form that she calls visual theater . Her work mainly integrates visual arts, music, dance and new media . In collaboration with other artists of these genres, performances are created that are primarily visual. By largely dispensing with words, she reaches audiences regardless of origin, language and often age.

Life

Karin Schäfer was born in Mödling, but grew up in Vienna and Neusiedl am See . In 1987 she went to Spain to study puppetry and puppet theater with Harry V. Tozer at the Instituto del Teatro, Barcelona .

In 1989 she founded the Per Poc puppet theater together with Santi Arnal in Barcelona, ​​Spain . First own production was "Piccolo Forte Pianissimo". By 1993, the two performed in Spain, France, Germany and Belgium. 1991–1993 a further collaboration developed with the Spanish puppeteer Jordi Bertran: in 1992 “Poemas Visuales” was created, which was first performed in France and Spain and in 1994 was awarded the jury prize of the Cannes International Theater Festival .

In cooperation with the children's theater Schneck + Co , Karin Schäfer designed and built the puppets for “ Post für den Tiger ” in 1993 , a play based on Janosch's picture book , which was subsequently seen in more than 100 performances in Austria and also in several ORF Broadcasts was a guest.

In 2002 “home @ anywhere” was created, a play for young people about the life of young people in Pakistan, inspired by experiences and interviews from two trips to Lahore , Pakistan, and the Thar desert (cooperation with SCHÄXPIR - International Theater Festival Upper Austria ). In the same year Rose Dorn (based on the ballet Sleeping Beauty by Tchaikovsky ) had its premiere at the Vienna Konzerthaus - Ingrid Marsoner at the piano .

In 2003, Karin Schäfer founded PannOpticum , an international festival of visual theater, which has taken place in Neusiedl am See every two years and which she is artistic director. In 2004 he created “There is the worm in there”, which Breughel's famous picture children's games implemented.

In 2005 “Skywalker” was created, a co-production with Cordula Nossek / Dachtheater about the fictional encounter between Valentina Tereschkowa and Sally Ride (these were the first female astronauts in their hemispheres, the first twenty years before the second). It was performed in the Dschungel Wien, theater for young audiences ( Museumsquartier ).

In the same year, Pictures at an Exhibition also premiered: An homage to famous works of the 20th century based on the music of Modest Mussorgsky , played by the Austrian pianist Christopher Hinterhuber . In 2006, on the occasion of the ISAF World Sailing Games taking place at Lake Neusiedl, the co-production “Wind und weiter” was staged, a non-verbal multimedia performance for a multinational audience. In 2007 she and her team built the characters for the play "Bradley - last row, last place" by Louise Sachar in the Theater der Jugend in Vienna.

In 2008 she worked with the Neue Bühne Villach on the project “How to grab your wishes by the tail” by Pablo Picasso , responsible for the construction of the figures and the figure coaching.

In 2008, “Wind und weiter” was re-staged and premiered together with the Institute for Transacoustic Research (Jörg Piringer / Ernst Reitermaier) and the musician Cordula Bösze in the Vienna Konzerthaus , Neuer Saal. The piece then went on a tour of Austria on behalf of Jeunesse - Musical Youth Austria.

In 2010 the orchestral version of “Pictures at an Exhibition” premiered together with the Izmir State Symphony Orchestra at the Izmir Festival in Turkey, and in the same year the piece was shown together with the Vorarlberg Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Feldkirch Festival .

In 2010 she was the winner of the Burgenland Foundation Theodor Kery, in October 2010 the premiere of her play “Zheng He - When the Dragon Ships Came” about the famous Chinese explorer Zheng He took place in the Vienna jungle in the Museum Quarter . With this play the Karin Schäfer Figures Theater has had over 100 performances in 20 countries worldwide.

In 2012, the premiere of “Fahrt ins Blaue” based on a text by Richard Berczeller took place as part of the ORF Funksalon in Eisenstadt.

In 2013 she performed guest performances with “Pictures at an Exhibition” at the Bonn Opera, where she and her ensemble performed together with the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn . There was also a new production of “Rose Dorn” based on Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty, which went on tour in Austria together with the pianist Ardita Statovci on behalf of Jeunesse and had guest performances in Germany.

In 2014 the Poppetpeople ° Art ° Project started with collaborations in Shanghai and Vienna and she performed her piece “Pictures at an Exhibition” together with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon in the Auditorio Miguel Delibes in Valladolid (Spain), which in 6 performances more than 5.500 viewers.
