On March 1st, 2012 it was integrated into the new regional directorate of Saxony .

history
As early as the middle of the 19th century, there were state middle authorities in the Kingdom of Saxony , which at the time were called "district chiefs " and which have changed their borders several times in the course of history. The administrative district of Dresden goes back to the district main team Bautzen and the district main team Dresden , which were only merged in 1932 to form the district main team Dresden-Bautzen . In 1939 it was renamed the Dresden-Bautzen administrative district . After the Second World War , administrative districts should initially be established again, but this intention was abandoned in 1947.
After the dissolution of the federal states in the GDR in 1952, districts were set up according to the centralized organizational principle , but their function could hardly be compared with today's administrative districts. Only with the re-establishment of the state of Saxony in 1990 was the basis for the formation of new government districts created.
Since then, the Dresden regional directorate has largely covered the area of the Dresden district . In addition, the then circles came Hoyerswerda and Weißwasser the district Cottbus after a plebiscite in the districts showed the majority of the population wanted the membership of the state of Saxony.
On January 1, 2008, the then administrative district comprised three independent cities and 201 municipalities in eight rural districts. The regional council was transformed into the regional directorate in the course of the district reform of Saxony in 2008 .
The President of the State Directorate Henry Hasenpflug was appointed State Secretary in the Saxon State Ministry for Science and Art in December 2010. Since his inauguration on June 1, 2011, Dietrich Gökelmann , President of the Chemnitz Regional Directorate , also assumed the functions of the President of the Dresden and Leipzig Regional Directorates until the new Saxony Regional Directorate was established in March 2012.
Administrative headquarters
The headquarters of the Dresden Regional Directorate was located in Albertstadt in a former barracks building ( Kaiser-Grenadier-Kaserne ), which was originally the Grenadier Regiment "Kaiser Wilhelm, King of Prussia" (2nd Royal Saxon) No. 101 of the Saxon Army in Dresden housed.
