The East Timorese-South African relations describe the interstate relationship between East Timor and South Africa .

history

In July 1997, South African President Nelson Mandela visited Indonesia and met both President Suharto and the imprisoned leader of the East Timorese independence movement, Xanana Gusmão . Mandela issued a written statement urging the release of all East Timorese political leaders. “ We can never normalize the situation in East Timor unless all political leaders, including Mr Gusmão, are released. It is you who have to find a solution. ” The Indonesian government rejected the request, but announced that Gusmão's prison term, which was 20 years in total, would be reduced by three months.

After the end of the Indonesian occupation of East Timor, the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission served as a model for the Truth and Friendship Commission (CTF), which was supposed to deal with the crimes of 1999 instead of prosecuting them in East Timor and Indonesia .

In 2013, Xanana Gusmão, now Prime Minister of East Timor , represented his country at the state funeral for Nelson Mandela .
