history

Mozambique and East Timor are both former colonies of Portugal and members of the Community of Portuguese- Speaking Countries (CPLP). During the Portuguese colonial period , there was a small Mozambican minority in Portuguese Timor . Most served as soldiers of the colonial power, some of the Mozambicans had been exiled to Timor after they had campaigned for the independence of Portuguese East Africa . In some cases this movement also served as a model for the East Timorese national movement. The East Timorese José Ramos-Horta spent his exile in Mozambique from 1970 to 1971.

While Mozambique was granted independence on June 25, 1975, FRETILIN in East Timor initially unilaterally proclaimed independence on November 28, 1975. Mozambique was one of only twelve states that recognized East Timor as a state. A few days later, Indonesia began openly invading East Timor and occupied the country for 24 years. Numerous FRETILIN activists found asylum in Mozambique, such as Ana Pessoa Pinto , Gregório de Sousa and Madalena Boavida . As the official representative of FRETILIN, Roque Rodrigues had the status of ambassador for East Timor. Also Marí Alkatiri , Foreign Minister of the exile government of FRETILIN, lived in Maputo. This group of exiles is still very influential in East Timor’s politics and is commonly referred to as the Maputo group . The Associação Moçambicana por Timor (AMOTIL) was set up in Mozambique to support East Timor .

East Timor's independence was restored on May 20, 2002. Police officers from Mozambique participated in the United Nations Interim Administration for East Timor (UNTAET).

After the destruction caused by cyclone Idai in 2019, East Timor donated one million US dollars to the affected Mozambique.

diplomacy

The Embassy of Mozambique in Jakarta , Indonesia is also responsible for East Timor. There is also an honorary consulate in Dili on Avenida Mártires da Pátria .

Mozambique was the first country in Africa in which the new state of East Timor set up an official embassy. It was opened on April 13, 2004 by East Timor's Foreign Minister José Ramos-Horta. Marina Ribeiro Alkatiri , the wife of Marí Alkatiri, who was Prime Minister at the time, initially became East Timor's deputy ambassador. On June 24th, 2009 Marina Alkatiri became the official ambassador of her country.
