The Angolan-East Timorese relations have existed since the Portuguese colonial days of both countries. The states of Angola and East Timor maintain friendly relations.

history

Fidelino Loy de Jesus Figueiredo , Angola's ambassador to East Timor since 2011

Angola and East Timor are both former colonies of Portugal and members of the Community of Portuguese- Speaking Countries (CPLP). During the Portuguese colonial period , Angolan soldiers were sent several times to Timor to quell unrest. Angolans were also sentenced to exile in Portuguese Timor and banished there. In return, the leaders of the Viqueque Rebellion of 1959 came to Angola after their deportation.

While Angola was granted independence on November 11, 1975, FRETILIN in East Timor initially unilaterally proclaimed independence on November 28, 1975. Angola was one of only twelve states that recognized East Timor as a state. A few days later, Indonesia began openly invading East Timor and occupied the country for 24 years. In addition to Mozambique , Angola was also a destination for East Timorese into exile. The future Prime Minister Marí Bin Amude Alkatiri and the politician João Viegas Carrascalão graduated from the Angolan School of Geography as a surveyor in 1970 . The East Timorese politician Manuel Azancot de Menezes has family ties to Angola . It was not until 2002 that East Timor was given independence again after three years of UN administration .

Angola and East Timor work together primarily on defense, security, education, health, petroleum and agriculture, mostly at parliamentary level.

diplomacy

Angola's embassy in Singapore also looks after East Timor. It was announced several times that Angola would soon open an embassy in Dili .

Roque Rodrigues became the official representative of FRETILIN in Maputo for Mozambique and Angola, from February 1979 only in Angola. In 1984 he was accredited by the Angolan government as Ambassador of East Timor. The Angolan government and especially the later Foreign Minister Paulo Teixeira Jorge supported the work of the East Timorese embassy. Rodrigues held the office until 1999, when the embassy had to be closed for financial reasons and East Timor came under UN administration after the Indonesians had left. In the following years, Angola was also looked after by Marina Ribeiro Alkatiri from Maputo. The new embassy in Luanda was only opened after 2012 .
