The states of Cape Verde and East Timor maintain friendly relations .

history

Cape Verde and East Timor are both former Portuguese colonies and members of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).

While Cape Verde was granted independence on July 5, 1975 after the Carnation Revolution in Portugal , the unilateral proclamation of East Timor's independence by FRETILIN on November 28, 1975 was initially not recognized by Portugal. Cape Verde was one of only twelve nations that recognized East Timor as a state. A few days later, Indonesia began openly invading East Timor and occupied the country for 24 years.

Since the final independence of East Timor in 2002, Cape Verde and the Southeast Asian country have enjoyed friendly relations, especially under the CPLP.

In 2005, East Timor's Prime Minister Marí Alkatiri made a state visit to Cape Verde. He was accompanied by Finance Minister Madalena Boavida , Justice Minister Domingos Sarmento , Secretary General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nelson Santos and East Timor's Ambassador in Lisbon Pascoela Barreto .

Several other East Timorese ministers visited Cape Verde in the following years, such as Finance Minister Emília Pires 2010 and Education Minister João Câncio Freitas 2012

In 2012, Jorge Carlos Fonseca was the first President of Cape Verdean to visit East Timor. The topics of his discussions were the cooperation between Cape Verde and East Timor in the fields of energy, information and communication technologies, higher education and agriculture. Fonseca was already in the country in 2000 and 2001 as an advisor on the establishment of the East Timorese state during the United Nations interim administration for East Timor .

During the visit of East Timor's Interior Minister Longuinhos Monteiro in Praia in 2016 he said to help with the radio problems of the National Police of Cape Verde. Other topics were road safety, civil protection and police training. East Timor wanted to provide support from Cape Verdean personnel for a few months.

In 2017, Cape Verdean Education Minister Maritza Rosabal and her East Timorese colleague António da Conceição agreed to send 16 Cape Verdean teachers to East Timor. They are supposed to help with Portuguese lessons in the Southeast Asian country where there are still deficits. At the same time, from 2017, 43 East Timorese students were to be taught at universities in Cape Verde.

The long-standing Cape Verdean minister, Cristina Fontes Lima, works as an advisor for the East Timorese government.

diplomacy

Natália Carrascalão Antunes , East Timorese ambassador in Lisbon , was the first East Timorese diplomat to be accredited for Cape Verde as of November 18, 2009 , alongside Portugal and Spain . East Timor was only the second former Portuguese colony after Angola to be represented at ambassador level in Cape Verde.

The visa requirement between Cape Verde and East Timor has been lifted since 2015.
