Otgonbayar Ershuu ( Mongolian Эршүүгийн Отгонбаяр Verschüügiin Otgonbajar ; born January 18, 1981 in Ulaanbaatar ) is a Mongolian painter. His stage name is OTGO.

Life

He grew up with seven siblings and one adoptive brother. Painting has fascinated him since his youth. His talent was recognized and by the age of 15 he had solo exhibitions. He studied traditional Mongolian painting in Ulaanbaatar in 1998. During his university studies, Ershuu created almost four hundred pictures. After completing his studies, he took part as a painter and restorer on several research trips to historical sites in Mongolia. In the Buddhist-Lamaist monasteries he studied various techniques and the iconography of miniature painting as well as their spiritual backgrounds.

Since 1998 he has been living as a freelance artist. In addition to free artistic work, his work also includes around six hundred “research images”. Ershuu has lived in Berlin since 2005. From 2007 to 2010 he studied at the Institute for Art in Context, Faculty of Fine Arts, Berlin University of the Arts and graduated in 2010 with a Master of Arts degree. Thangka painting

OTGO's thangkas were not created out of religious intentions; he was much more attracted by the challenge of learning a work technique that was as demanding as it was traditional. A fascination for the production technique and the own claim of an individual artistic implementation, despite fixed regulations, aroused the ambition of the artist and were the beginning of a year-long development in the field of thangka painting. OTGO developed its technology on long journeys through Mongolia. A special feature of OTGO's thangkas is that he paints the drawing directly on the canvas and thus leaves out the work step on the sketch sheet. If you take into account that his pictures are only slightly larger than a slide, it quickly becomes clear how detailed the painter has to work to produce a picture. Otgonbayar Ershuu made 600 thangkas, most of which were created in a single work step. Each line can only be set once, it is almost impossible to correct mistakes. The state of high concentration must be maintained for hours, regardless of natural human needs or unpredictable disruptive factors.

The Mongolian thangka painting is miniaturized according to the national tradition and the iconography was also adapted to the diverse world of belief. OTGO's repertoire of figures makes use of the divine worlds of shamanism , tengrism and Buddhism . The mostly erotic depiction of the subjects is striking. A guiding principle of the Mongolian faith is the achievement of the "all - unity" by overcoming all contradictions of the real world of appearance. Symbolic for this process is the sexual union between man and woman, which ultimately bears the seeds of new life. Taking this basic idea into account, the eroticization of religious image content becomes a natural, almost self-evident consequence. Otgonbayar Ershuu takes his subjects and figures of gods from traditional art representations. Some of his miniature gods are details of a large painting or the painterly interpretation of a sculpture, but they are always individualized in his very own special way and have become real "OTGOs".

Otgonbayar Ershuu works with different primer colors in the production of his thangkas , in order to get this a pre-treatment of the canvases is necessary. The black primer is a mixture of black soot , chalk and vodka or milk schnapps. Pigments from minerals or plants are added to this mixture. Finally, the mixture is bound with glue made from yak skin and applied to the canvas on both sides. A smell test on the small pictures reveals the use of soot and alcohol to treat the fabric even after more than ten years and gives the works their character.

Comic

Comic: The Secret History of the Mongols , drawing ink on paper, 21 × 30 cm

A long-standing work by Otgonbayar Ershuu is "The Secret History of the Mongols - Told as a comic in the style of Mongolian painting". This comic consists of approx. 600 pages, which are divided into twelve chapters. Each page of the book shows several pictures, so that the work comprises a total of around 3000 drawings. The "Secret History of the Mongols" was written about 800 years ago. It is the oldest and most important literary work of the Mongols, myth, epic and chronicle at the same time. Originally it does not contain any illustrations. In order to make this story more understandable and interesting for all age groups, he decided to work the content of this important work as Mongolian miniature painting. A particular concern for him during the preparation of the comic was to reproduce ethnic characteristics of the Mongols as well as historical facts and artefacts as faithfully as possible. Therefore, extensive research was required in this regard, which has led him into various scientific areas. By including miniature painting, something characteristic and traditional Mongolian should be taken up.

“... Sometimes his art turns into the almost grotesque, as if the image of people is so full that they start to eat at each other. Whole arms disappear into another person's mouth, crowds of people meander close to each other, and one can either associate with overpopulation or with a global orgy that is perishing. "

- Åsa Jonsén

“... Through his studies, OTGO has developed miniature painting into a new bloom. From the change in the viewer's distance to the image, the image-in-image structure unfolds as if through an artfully arranged prism telescope, which opens up detailed scenarios with completely independent meaning with every step that one comes closer to the object, while the overall impression of the image from the Distance, which through playful use of colors and motifs, the peaceful juxtaposition of template-like precise elements, always appearing light and cheerful, gradually suppressed and forgotten. With every step, the viewer encounters a new, diverse inner workings of the picture. "

- Uwe Ahnert

“… Otgonbayar Ershuu has meanwhile become 'A Mongol with thousands of horses…' who gallop across his canvases in colorful herds, booming, and carry us into a multifaceted miniature universe. Minimundus explains the world to us, Otgonbayar will explain Mongolia, the land of horses, to us. Who else should do it, who else painted half a million horses? "

- Martina Busch

“… The pictures presented in Mannheim show flying, swimming, running people and animals, isolated and condensed into groups, integrated into a cosmos of natural elements that are clearly staged in color. Everything is in motion, change, transformation. OTGOS pictures let us feel in painterly expressive language an idea of the harmony between man and nature in spaces still partially untouched by civilization, spaces of an earthly paradise, which in some ways is in harmony with our western idea of a holistic harmony. "

“… The work of this Mongolian artist, who has been living in Berlin since 2005, can justifiably be counted as part of a world art that encompasses all cultures. Not only has he consistently brought the art of his Mongolian homeland into the present and is a cultural ambassador for his people in the world, he also stands for a young, global generation that respects regional traditions and at the same time acts internationally. In a careful and very successful way, he blends western and eastern artistic traditions into one another and thus creates an art that has arrived in globalization. "

- Martin Stather

“… His painting turns out to be an independent visual phenomenon. The consciously brought about and artistically mastered situation of hybridity in the superimposition of two cultures becomes a gateway for new things. "
