The Otto-Nagel-Gymnasium (short: ONG ) is a high school in the Berlin district of Biesdorf in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district . It is named after the Berlin painter Otto Nagel , who spent the evening of his life in Biesdorf.

On July 1, 2003, the grammar school was awarded the title School Without Racism - School With Courage . In addition, on October 1, 2009, the high school received the World Peace School award .

School profile

The Otto-Nagel-Gymnasium is a versatile and general education school. It offers a wide range of options for every subject. In addition, the grammar school takes part in a variety of activities and programs, the focus of which is on imparting a fundamental understanding of democracy as well as a modern and cosmopolitan concept of tolerance and communicative and critical cooperation.

location

The high school is located at Schulstrasse 11 near Bundesstrasse 1 . The Biesdorf S-Bahn ( S-Bahn line S5, bus line 192 ) and the Oberfeldstraße and Lötschbergstraße (bus 108) stops on Bundesstraße 1 are around 300 meters away , and there is also the Elsterwerdaer Platz underground station ( line U5 , Bus routes X69, 108, 154, 169, 190 and 398) in a short distance.

particularities

Fast learner program

The high school participates in the fast-learning program. Two class trains from grade 5 are accepted each year, and they complete their Abitur in twelve years. In addition to the regular timetable, the quick learners attend enrichment courses. These courses serve to promote the gifted. In smaller learning groups, teaching is project-based and student-oriented. In addition, two normal class trains from grade 7 are enrolled every year.

Notebook classes

Since the 2009/2010 school year, laptops have been used in class . These are financed by the parents; those who cannot find the money for it receive support from the school's learning resources association. The aim is to increase the students' media skills and expand the range of courses. After consultation with the staff and between the departments, the computers are used in lessons for a period of time depending on the class level of the students.

Furnishing

There is a WLAN school network that enables every student to work with the Internet for research and school preparation .

The school is completely free of chalk. There are permanently installed, electronic blackboards ( smartboards ) in all rooms, which, for example, enable digital presentations to be shown in all rooms. The school organization is also computer-aided, in particular through digital notice boards, which are used for current announcements and the presentation of the substitution plan.

There are specialist rooms for chemistry, physics and biology. A fully equipped music room is available.

On each floor (except in the basement) there are two separate student toilets, which are equipped with environmentally friendly, water-saving flushing.

Basketball hoops and a soccer field are located directly on the school grounds. Two sports fields and two spacious modern gyms are used for physical education and sports interest groups, all of which are located in the immediate vicinity of the school (Eugen-Roth-Weg).

The school yard was completely redesigned a few years ago. A “green classroom”, which previously consisted of an open-air wooden stage and several rows of seats, is to be rebuilt after the pedestrian bridge has been successfully converted. The bicycle racks in the courtyard provide the students with numerous storage options for their bicycles.

The school has a solar system on the roof and a wind turbine for environmentally friendly energy generation.

78 teachers and 13 trainee teachers teach at the school (as of 2019).

Renovation of the attic

After the last major overhaul of the school building in 1991, the dilapidated gymnasium was demolished. Since an investigation at the beginning of 2012 found no longer permitted wood preservatives, the top floor, in which the two art spaces are located, was also completely renovated and expanded, so that the capacity of the building was increased. It was also planned to build an auditorium with a few classrooms at the old location of the gym.

In order to ensure the continuation of the lessons, two grades were initially taught in the Melanchthon Gymnasium . After it became clear that the statics of the lower part of the building had to be changed for the roof extension, the basement was also blocked and two more classes were accommodated in the Melanchthon grammar school. The top floor was completed in 2019.

The auditorium was completed in 2016 and the upper floors during the 2017 summer vacation. The subject rooms can be used since the beginning of the 2018 school year.

World Peace School and School without Racism

On July 1st, 2003 the Otto-Nagel-Gymnasium was awarded the title “ School without Racism, School with Courage ” for special commitment, tolerance and cosmopolitanism. Schools thus make it their task to consciously and with full commitment to oppose discrimination , bullying and violence. With the help of sustainable and long-term projects, the climate between all learning and teaching people at the school should be improved and, in particular, racism should be overcome. In openly dealing with a problem and finding common paths, students should learn to respect one another. The title represents a self-commitment for the present and the future. It says: “We take responsibility!” The Otto-Nagel-Gymnasium is one of a total of 630 schools that are also part of the network.

On October 1st, 2009 the Otto-Nagel-Gymnasium was also awarded the title “Peace School”. This award honors schools that are particularly committed to the “Work for peace” project. The pupils at Otto-Nagel-Gymnasium spent one afternoon helping buyers in Kaufland at the Biesdorf Center. In total they were able to collect 2000 euros with this campaign and this money was used for educational projects in Africa. The title was awarded by the World Peace Service and the Berlin Senate Administration.

Projects and Actions

The grammar school took part in the BLK project “Learning and Living Democracy”, in the course of which the students of the younger years already learned what it means to take on responsibility in our democratic society. In addition to method training, communication training and team development training are also available for younger students.

Numerous school traditions, such as the project days for grades 5 to 10, the annual project for grades 11, the summer culture weeks, sports and games festivals, mathematics, geography and knowledge competitions as well as school partnerships and exchange programs with Paris and Montréal, some of which involve trips lasting several weeks , Israel , Denmark and Switzerland , course trips for the 12th and 13th grades, ski and surfing courses, annual class and educational trips as well as numerous other opportunities to get to know and experience foreign cultures round off the culturally diverse offer of the school.

At the end of 2012, the school's website was completely redesigned by a group of students as part of a project by the computer science and visual arts departments. An identity-creating catalog of visual specifications for websites and other school projects was developed.

This catalog was also implemented in the new school newspaper developed by the editorial team . It was published for the third time in early 2014.

In the ZasterMaster competition of the Berliner Volksbank , the editorial team won a prize of 6,000 euros for its social work.

The grammar school was merged with the Oberschule am Elsengrund in 2009 . As a result, numerous teachers and students were taken on.
